N 1919 Hugo Mariani, a young man, slight in build, with the olive skin and the quick, nervous gestures of the Latin American, arrived in New York, his head crammed full of musical knowledge, but without friends and hardly enough money to pay for his first night's lodging. He hal sailed from his. native South America a musical prodigy, with a de- termination to be- come ome of the in the United States. How well he suc- ceeded is now well known. Today, as leader of various orchestras heard over the N. B. C. mnetworks, his inter- pretations of every kind of music, from symphony to the bluest of jazz tunes, is familiar to the radio public. Mariani was born in Montevideo, Uraguay, of Italian par- entage. Music was his natural heritage, for his father was one of the best known teachers of the violin in the Latin American republic. | Mariani came to radio from the Wal dor{-Astcria Orchestra. He is now per- | sonnel director of tre orchestra degart- | ment of the N. B. C, and in addition | conducts many different kinds and types | of orchestra, though he is an apostie of modern jazz. / Huge Mariani. ME.
