12 DIVING BOMBER TYPE PLANES BOUGHT BY NAVY Recently Developed Craft Insuring Greater Accuracy Given Tests at Anacostia. Twelve planes of the diving bomber type, recently experimented with at the Naval Air Station at Anacostia, were purchased today by the Navy Depart- ment, ursler contract with the Glenn L. Martin Co. of Baltimore. The Navy Department said the oontnct price, in- cluding spare parts, is $525,000. ‘The Bureau of Aeronautics recently developed this type plane, which is known as the BM-: 1 in conjunction with the Martin concern. The department explained that in this type ship the bomb is released when the pll.ne is at the end of a vertical dive, instead of in a horizontal position, as is the present universal practice, which in- sures greater accuracy in bombing oper- ations.
