VENICE (N.AN. ~—At the Church of the Blessed Virgin of Heaith, at the entrance to the Grand Canal, there have been festivities that you might have connected with Christmas for weeks past, for Venice has been celebrati: the third centenary of its vote to Wl’l‘s a church to the Madonna 1f she would set the city free from the plague which was then raging A temporary bridge of gorgeously il= Iuminated boats has been carrying thou= sands of worshipers across to the serv- ices, preceded by little white-surpliced boys throwing flowers as they go. A figure of the Madonna borne by priests is a feature of these processions, which have drawn great crowds to the square of St. Mark to see the pariarch of Ven= ice pass by. The church is still won- derfully illuminated. (Copyright, 1930. by the North American Newspaper Alliance.) FAMOUS VIEN‘NA THEATER CLOSED BY TAX BURDEN Kammerspiele “One of Tiniest and Most Amusing” in Any Cap- ital, It Is Said. VIENNA (N.AN.A).—The jolly lit- tle Kammerspiele Theater, one of the tiniest and most amusing in any capi- tal, has had to close down. Here one used to be sure of riotously funny farce and daring trifies of impropriety that out-Parised Paris. There were two per- formances a night, one at 7 o'clock and one at midnight, and the late one suited that section of Viennese soclety that dines latest of all. In Vienna, theater buildings them- selves, not their management, are held responsible for arrears of entertainment tax, and so one looks at the closed doors of the Kammerspiele with despondency. And with more still, when one compares the taxes charg>d here and in London, for instance. London managers pay an average of 171, per cent of the gross takings to the state: in Vienna, theaters have to pay two taxes, one to the state and one to the municipality, and the total, according to the nature of the entertainment, varies from 25 to 45 per cent. A new tenant could mot open the Kammerspiele until he had paid off his predecessor’s tax arrears. (Copyright, 1930. by Notth American News- paper Alliance.) AUTO LOANS. By the Associated Press ISTANBUL, Turkey, December 25— An attempt of six Turkish fanatics to stir up a revolution in the village of Menemen, near Smyrna, Tuesday failed. ‘The rebels beheaded a z:t:uth ‘who attempted to inform the police of their activities, and in subsequent fighting two gendarmes were killed and four civilians wounded. Three rebels were killed and one was captured. The leader escaped. 4 The rebellion had its incéption in an expedition of rebels who came from the mountains and attempted to incite the population to overthrow the Kemalist regime and restore the Caliphate. The government has called out the militia throughout Smyrna Province, arresting many suspected of subversion. A secret Takke Dervish monastery has been discovered at Manissa, where the rebellion was hatched. 8 AUCTION SALER. FUTURE DAYS. AUTOMOBILES AT WESCHLER'S Auto Auction 613 G St. N.W.
