Radio will herald” tonight the com- ing of Christmas with a dazzling array cf musical presentations and special features. The outstanding event, how- ever, will be the national community Christmas tree celebration in Sherman Square, at which President Hoover il participate, surrounded by members of his Cabinet, members of Congress and | high Government officials. Mr. Hoover will press the button lighting the community tree, and im-‘ mediat:ly after will broadcast hu\ Chrisimas greetings to the Nation through extensive networks of both the National and Columbia broadcasting systems. WMAL and WRC will be tied in their respective chains for this cere- mony, which is scheduled to start at 6 o'clock. Many Special Programs. Aside from the community tree exer- cises, both WRC and WMAL will carry a number of cther special Christmas eve programs arranged by their respec- tive networks. These stations also will broadcast their usual array of spon- cored attractions, all of which will make a hcliday atmosphere. WRC's major presentation will be a two-hour Christmas eve party, start- ing at 11 o'clock. The program will consist of music and cramatic sketches, in which many of the leading dance orchestras, vocalists and instrumental- ists will participate. “The Night Before Christmas” is the title of a musical sketch WRC will broadcast at 8:30 o'clock. Nathaniel | Shilkret's Orchestra will present the| sketch, assisted by Marcella Shields, | character comedienne, and a male chorus of eight vcices. English Singers on Air. The English Singers, of London, an | internaticnally famous choral group, | will be featured in the program at 10:30 o'clock. These are a concert | by the De'roit Symphony Orchestra, | assisted by a choir of 250 voices; dramatic version of Charles Dickens’ “Christmas Carol,” and an impressive Christmas carol service at midnight, precented by the Columbia Symphony Orchestra, a chorus of 40 voices and a number of popular radio vocalists. Oratorio to Be Sung. ‘The Detroit Symphony Orchestra and choir will feature a portion of Handel's famous oratcrio, “The Messiah.” The orchestra also will play Tschaikowsky’s “Nutcracker Suite.” Other Christmas features will come during the Fast Freight program and | the Smoke Dreams program. ‘WOL has arranged a gala Christmas | Eve program, which will keep the sta- tion on the air continuously until 3 o'clock tomorrow morning. The out- standing attractions will be a special “DX” organ recital by Don and Ron and a broadcast of the solemn high mass from the Church of the Immacu- late Conception. Rev. Francis J. Hur- ney will be the celebrant. Carols will be sung by the Boys’ Sanctuary Chotr, with Precerick Nolan as soloist. ‘WJSV’s Christmas Eve feature will be a program of carols, presented by the| choir of St. Paul's M. E.
