-SAFER COMMUNITY 1S CAMPAIGN AIM Bixteenth Street Helghts to Make Survey and Ask Better Lighting. A campaign to provide greater safe- &y for the community was launched by the Sixteenth Street Heights Citi~ mens' Association at a meeting last night in Northminster Chlgel. Alaska mvenue and Kalmia road, when it was voted to direct H. L. Stroh, chairman of the Pire, Police and Lights Com- mittee, to make a survey of ihe section and request the Commissioners to pro- vide adequate lighting facilities. It was reported that street lJamps already had been placed in several neighborhoods, but attention will be directed to other localities where lights are needed. The association voted an appropria- tion of $50 toward expenses of a group of residents of the community in fight- ing erection of stores in what property owners, it was said, were led to believe would ot be zoned other than resi- dential. It was declared that the stores, located on a triangular lot on Alaska avenue near Kalmia road, had been rected without regard to zining regula- ons and had been ordered removed by court order. This order, it was said, has been disregarded and an effort is to be made to have the persons jn- terested cited for contempt. Protection Need Stressed. Need for fire protection in the nnn #gain was stressed in remarks by the ruldt‘nl Joseph H. Wilson, who said Ehs association would continue its en- deavors to have provided the protection it merits. Being a suburban section, most of the homes detached and a number of frame construction, he said, warranted greater security from disas- ter than having to depend on the nearest District fire-fighting equipment, which is several miles distant. Free express delivery for the eom- munity also was discussed and decision made to strive for this end. The atti- tude of the express agencles in ac- cepting consignments in other cities with charges prepaid and then ehn!u ing an additional fee on delivery Sixteenth Street Heights was held fo be unjustified and unwarranted. Decorations Are Requested. Action was taken on motion of C. M. Chinn, requesting all residents to dec- orate the exteriors of their homes and their trees and shrubbery with elec- tric lights for the Christmas holidays. A eommittee is to judge the most at- tractive block and give publicity in the city-wide contest for best electrical demonstration. Request will be made for the plant- ing of trees on a number of strepts in the section, and a donation was voted to the operators of the snow ow which the association maintains for cleaning sidewalks after each pre- elpitation Capt. Walter Emerson, in charge of the thirteenth police precinct, address- ed the meeting, pointing out the de- sirability of co-operation between the citizens and the police. R. B. Keech, unsel, will be invited to ad- meeting of the as<o President Joseph H. Wilson presided.
