PLAN ‘BACKFIRING' T0 PREVENT STORM Dr. Franklin Conceives Idea as Means of Protection Against Hurricanes. WINTER PARK. Fla. (#).—“Backfir- ing” to protect against West Indian hurricanes on exactly the principle that forest fire devastation is stopped is the latest proposal of science. The idea, originated by the late Dr. Willlam 8. Franklin, former professor of physics at Rollins College, has been submitted to meteorological and other sslentific authorities according to plans made before his death. A hurricane, he held, probably much of its tremendous energy like a forest fire, by feeding upon certain fa- vorable conditions lying waiting in its ‘This hurricane “food” lies in a pecul- far formation of the atmosphere, in Which a lower layer of warm, moist air is topped by a great blanket of abnor- mally cold air. The potential energy in this combination, due to the tendency of the warm air to start rushing up- ward, Dr. Franklin said, is tremendous. If, he said, as & hurricane approaches an area, a series of artificial ex- ns could start the local warm air rushing rd, & local storm might and create an area denuded of its tial hurricane energy. ‘To provide these backfire storms, Dr. suggested steel cones, about 100 feet in diameter and several hun- dnd feet high, open at the top. In the %fi)m of :ach he véould !x}-‘ plode several tons of gunpowder, eac! upu:’um projecting upward about 3¢ Dr. Franklin said that no one could mdm whet.her such a plan would suc- it that certain preliminary ob- ml'.lnnl which could be made safely are well warranted in view of the tre- mendous losses from hurricanes. ‘The plan was sent to United Stats Senator Duncan U. Flecher of Florida, ‘who submitted it to the United States ‘Weather Bureau, which advised that it 'Il not feasible, It was sent also to Bureau g} ata,{nhrus. which re- t.urnod a similar reply. Franklin began advocating the plan two years ago while a member of the usetts Institute of Technology faculty. ROSS F. TUCKER. NEW BUILDING MATERIAL SOUGHT Prof. Tucker Conducts Ex- periments at M. I. T. to Provide Better Homes. CAMBRIDGE, Mass. .—Daring plans to develcp a kind building material that does not now exist are under way at Massachusetts Institute of Technology. plans are the answer of science to the fire hazard, to the high cost of homes and the m% expense of repairs. The aim is to put better homes in reach of every one and to improve building generally. Research has started under direction of Ross F. Tucker, profsssor of building construction. “We do not know yet just how it will be done,” he says, “but to find out how and to do it is one of the things this school is for. The new materiais may be of or cement, or some en- Ml’!ly new materials. “They may, among other things, use the wood bar instcad of steel rein- forcement of concrete, to save weight. They must be something light enough so that two men can set them in place. “This is cement that has been aerated,” he says. “It illustrates pos- sibilities. Chemicals caused this cem>nt to ‘rise;’ as bread dough rises from effects of yeast. compound gave off hydrogen, and expanded the cement into a structure made of thousands of air tight cells, resulting in light, strong material, “Man has improved many necessities, but for 50 years dwellings have been made of the same materials, and by the same hand labor. No way has yet been found to apply the methods of quantity production in construction of the modern home. “We still use many of the tools and build by the methods of our forefathers, yet we sp=nd about $6,000,000,000 a year for homes. “We seek to make dwellings that can be erected by unskilled labor, be fire resisting, more durable, insulated from cold, and yet come within limits of present home-cwners' incomes.” ot BLUE SKIES I.N BUILDINGS ARTIST’S GIFT TO TOILER (Copyright, 2500 by the ]lonh American Newspaper Alliance MUFFLER FOR PLANE INVENTED BY WOMAN Miss Eldorado Jones of Moline, Ill., | an "nch- Demonstrations at Roosevelt Field.
