Gilbert’s entire fate hangs in the balance, and there's some remaking to be done before this story is given over to the public and the crities. | “Make Way for a Sailor,” the story on which Lawrence Stallings has pul some of his most virile touches, the tale in which Jim Tully has been given a part, so that all this talk about enemy stuff and fisticuffs between the two boys would be at an end, is more milk | and water than its producers intended It was supposed to knock the audience for a goal, to lay the whisper low that Gilbert's_voice couldn't register in the | same fashion as his eyes and features. | This is John Gilbert's third talkie It was begun some four months ago.| It is calculated to restore him to the feminine favor that he lost with “One Glorious Night” and that he lost still further when “Resurrection” was re- leased. ‘This last-named was made be- fore the Molnar story, which was re- leased as his first talking picture. Within this roll of gelatin rests the future of the John Gilbert who has ruled a million feminine hearts the| world over. A man may make one or| two weak talkies, but the third is the fatal picture. On the third he stands or falls. | The romance of Gilbert and Ina| Claire is all polished up o far as Holly- | wood gossip is concerned. Those Who know Ina Claire admit that she must be | MERRICK. far happier on the East Coast than here, where domestic things haven't been going so well for her of late. Here is one of the stage actresses of quality, one of the beauties of renown, one of the women who have sincerely loved Gilbert (if the reports of mutual friends be true), and one of the ladies who have ruled his heart most briefly. So when you gaze at a male star from the darkness of a cinema auditorium, ladies fair, don't envy the girl who mar- ried him.' They have just as hard a time, and harder, achieving domestic happiness as most of the people in the audience. Gloria Swanson made her comedy debut in “What a Widow!"” BSaturday after all these years of dramatic seri- ousness. We have glimpsed the Swan- son in tears, in negliges, in_ evening gowns of such elaborate cut and fab- ric that it took our breath away, in coiffures_so elaborate that their in- tricacy left us mute. But slapstick comedy is another thing. It is done without regard to cost—dialogue by James Gleason, costumes by the best, and & staff of players which includes Lew Cody and Owen Moore. But it isn’t the Gloria Swanson which we've been accustomed to seeinz, and in moments one feels that Laura Hope Crewes proved entirely too good a coach. T imitation Crewes, and Gloria Swanson is a very different type from the blue-eyed, curly-haired Laura, whose exceeding femininity made her stage manner most desirable. 1 may be an old meanie, but I've seen Gloria Swanson in better pictures. | (Copyright, 1930. by North American News- paver Alliance.)
