By the Associated Press. ish made and shewn in the United States 10 years ago or more are having quite a run in Spain this Summer. ‘The reels that Hollywood ground out long before the talkie era are being used to fill the gap until a sufficlent supply of Spanish language talkies can be produced. When the first sound pictures W. | reached Madrid from the United States last Winter several of the largest Madrid theaters installed the necessary equipment and played to capacity houses. There was so much singing and music and dancing, and talkies were such a novelty, that they went big although, the English in them was meaningless to the auditors. Later there came a reaction. The Spanish audiences wanted Spanish language talkies, or else the old silent pictures. So far, the former not being sufficiently available, there has been only one thing to do—dig out the silents. o e S Wisconsin _asks 29 questions about every baby born in the State for its official birth records. Halsey- of Lynchburg yesterday signed the writ of election asked by the city council calling for a referendum October 14, when the bid of the Western Power Light and Telephone Co. for the city’s utilities plans will be submitted to the voters. Judge Halsey was sit- ting for Judge Henry Leigh, who re- fused to sign the writ because he deemed it improper—since he was & member of the power commission here. Judge Halsey affixed his signature after a hearing during which counsel for the Tri-Utilities Corporation, whose bid was rejected by the council, sought to halt the election on the ground that it did not conform to the law. Judge Halsey ruled that the voters would merely act in an advisory capac- ity and that it will be necessary for the councll to again vote on th con- summation of the sale.
