WOOD. Principal THE E WOOD HITS CHARGES AIMED AT HOOVER - Asserts Democratic Cam-| paign Chairman “Pastmas- ter”” in Misrepresentation. Coming to the defense of President Hoover. T2 resentative Wood of In-|from 11 diarw, chairman of the Republican Congressional Committee, issued & | | statement last night in which he | charged_that Jouett Shouse, chairman of the Democratic Nlflanll Executive Committee had attempted to *‘slander and malign” the Chief Executive. He declared that Shouse has become a “pastmaster” at the art of criticism and misrepresentation, but “more par- uculu-ly at that of misrepresentation.” “The plain truth is,” he asserted, | “that Mr. Shouse and his cohorts have ne purpose only, to assail, to slander and to malign the President of the | United States and to attempt to block N.s every efl'ort to carry forward the which he has set his Wood charged that Shouse's state- menu have “been crowded with in- accuracies and bald misstatements, showing ‘that he elther hes failed to inform himself of the facts or chosen to ignore them in the hope of gaining some temporary partisan advantage. Says People Demand Facts. “This - propaganda,” he continued, “may have served until the advent of the congressional campalgrs, but now that the voters must choose as between candidate and parties, they naturally demand something more than glittering generalities, something more than abuse, something more than plain ef- forts at obstruction and destruction. “Having listened for months to at- tacks; having seen Democrats in Con- gress use every means at their command to delay the administration program and so contribute to economic depres- sion and business uncertainty, the American people now demand that Mr. Shouse and his party come forward with a program. Voters Wait in Vain. “Through the months they have waited in vain for the Democratic leaders to do so. Nay, they have waited in vain for even so much as a single constructive proposal from the Democrats as to how they would at- tain the millenium which they so adroitly indicate would be present were they only in power.” One Broken Nose Follows Row Over Census Figures Offensive in Enemy’s Ter- ritory Proves Unlucky for Suburb Booster. By the Assoclated Press. EVANSTON, II1, August 18.—It some- times pays to take the offensive into the enemy's territory-—but not in Evanston. As president of Evanston'’s rival sub- urb, Oak Park, Erwin Eulrich should have realized he was on hostile ground, but the party at Willard Baird's last night started out friendly enough and Eulrich was off his guard. As the evening wore on and the con- versation wore out, he made a grave tactical error. “I see,” said Eulrich, “where Oak Park has a population of 63,819 to Evan- ston’s 61,766.” centage of growth is bigger.” Prom this point things grew rapidly | worse until Eulrich subsided under the force of a swift right to the nose. At the hospital it was found the nose had been broken. And as if this weren’t enough, the police announced they would arrest him for disorderly conduct when he gets out. News From E. R. Ritchie’s recent complaint against President Hoover’s failure to invite him to the Drought Conference was char- acterized as evidence of “an absurd and jronical lack of consistency” by Galen L. Tait, chairman of the Republican State Cen Committee of Maryland, in_a statement issued today. In his pronouncement, which he made a broadside against Ritchie's adminis- tration and efforts to identify Maryland as a “free State,” Tait declared that the “political house of cards, based on the ‘independence’ of Maryland, ‘that Gov. Ritchie has long sought to maintain, collapsed in the first wind of adversity.” Tait added that it “illy becomes Gov. Ritchie to complain because Washington has not come to Annapolis instead of Annapolis going to Washington.” Architects Know Value!
