Utilities Encounter Waves of Selling, but List Resists Pressure. BY JOHN A. CRONE. Special Dispatch to The Star. NEW YORK, April 5—The curb market, after opening lower ioday, in- creased its pace and continued that trend in a large part of the lst. The market as a whole, however, was not weak despite larger offerings. Electric Bond & Share opened n- changed at 111%, but gave way about & point as it ran into a series of suc- cessive selling waves, American Super- power and American & Foreign Power and, to a lesser degree, Niagara Hudson Power, also were compelled to absorb profit-taking. Commonwealth & Southern warrants were very active in the lower-priced utilities, After two blocks, one of 8,500 and another of 4,000 shares, showed little price change, a string of sales came out from 6's to 5 Lone Star Gas led the natural gas group as it advanced nearly 2 points to @& record high price. Arkansas Natural Gas A and Memphis natural gas at- tained new peak quotations, while other issues in the division pointed higher. Missouri-Kansas Pipe Line, which also 1s in the natural gas business, by a small fractional gain reached & new maximum level. Pacific Western Oil was one of the ' first miscellaneous petroleum issues to better its previous record high price Petroleum Corporation came Wwithin a slight fraction of its best price. Stand- ard Oil of Indiana opened slightly lower following the announcement of an offer of stock to employes at nearly 5 points below present levels. Fox Theaters A and Columbia Pic- tures, the latter reaching a new high, advanced in early trading, while Na- tional Screen Service and other amuse- ment shares were slipping in sympathy with the heaviness displayed by that group on the big board. Aluminum Co. of America opened up 3 points following publication of earn- ings, which showed a gain in net in- come of $4,645,750, North American_Aviation, which has applied for Stock Exchange listing. fea- tured the air shares at the opening by coming out with a block of 6.000 shares at 12, a new altitude for the year. Today the blue chips or investment stocks move as a separate group from the mar- ket as a whole. “The buying power of investment trusts and individual investors is be- coming concentrated on these blue chip stocks, representing a cross section of the various groups which formerly moved independently. I estimate that 80 per cent of the portfolios of leading | American investment trusts represents duplication among such issues. The in- vestment trusts, by focusing public at- tention on the better grade of stocks, have done much to bring about this new form of selectivity in the stock market. “That this tendency has already be- come well established is indicated by the character of odd-lot buying which is taking place and which is concen- trated largely on the high-grade issues. Stock price averages are no longer in- dicative of the action of the market as a whole, but are mainly indicative of the blue chip stocks from which those averages are made up. CHICAGO STOCK MARKET. Will Consider Pro- posed Boat Line to Cambridge. Washington business will profit con- siderably, in the opinion of Eastern Shore busmm men, if the proposed ferry be- tween Chesapeake Beach, Md., and Cambridge, Md., s*mnsored by the’ Ches- apeake Beach Rall way Co., is given per- mission to operate, Hearings ‘will begin Monday before the Interstate Commerce Commission on the company’s application to estab- lish such a service. The distance across the bay between these points is about 16 miles, and mileage to Eastern Shore points from this city would be cut from 24 to 36 miles, with corresponding sav- 1 ing in time. The Del-Mar-Va Eastern Shore As- sociation, composed of business men of the entire scction east of Chesapeake Bay. has expressed the view that the value of a service which would shorten the distance to Washington would be inestimable. The Cambridge Daily Ban- ner of Cambridge, Md., is particularly interested in making traffic improve- ments between the Eastern Shore and Washington, on the ground that Wash- ington attracts many tourists, many of whom drive into surrounding territory, {and that these visitors would be at- | tracted to the Eastern Shore if it were more accessible. By establishing a sec- ond ferry line across the bay, it is suggested that an attractive circle tour would be opened to motorists, who could go one way via Claiborne-Annapolis and the other way via Chesapeake Beach and Cambridge. The mayor of Cambridge, Earle W. Orem, has expressed the view that the new ferry would serve to bring many Eastern Shore products into Washing- ton. In_ general, interest along the Eastern Shore in making Washington more accessible is very keen, and it seems probable that considerable trade would be brought to this city if the new ferry went into operation.
