g s ALSTRALIANBAYD | TOPLAYOVERAR Bell on Parliament Building in ' London Also Will Be Heard Tonight. ‘The sound of Big Ben, England’s his- toric bell atop the Parliament buildings in London, and the melodies of a dance band in Sydney Australia, have been; incorporated in the gala radio programs; arranged to herald the advent of the new year. WRC and the National Brmdcuunm Co. network will broadcast these two| spectacular features, unless prevented by unfavorable atmosphcric conditions| between England and the United States | and San Prancisco and Sydney. ‘When Big Ben’s booming tones mark the end of the old year and the begin- ning of the new in England it will be | jusi 7 o'clock New Year eve in Wash- ington. At that time the pick-up of the signals from across the Atlantic will be attempted and the bell's notes and a New Year greeting from England to the United States will be rebroadcast. Because of the difference in time, the dance music from Australia is not scheduled to be heard until 4 o'clock | tomorrow morning. This will come at the end of the special New Year fea- ture, “Dancing Across the Country,’ which has been planned by the National Broadcasting Co. so that radio listeners will hear famous dance bands from | coast to coast from midnight to 4 am. ‘The Australian program will be sent on short waves to the General Electric! Co.’s special receiver at San Prancisco. Station WIZAL and associated Colum- bia Broadcasting System stations also will mark the passing of the old and th: coming of the new year with a gala program, in which is to be injected the merrymaking _atmosphere of Times square, New York. Eight dance bands wil: take part in this program, which is to begin at 11:15 o'clock and con- tinue to 1 am Shortly before mid- night, however, microphones will be suspended from the Paramount Thea- | ter. in the heart of Times square. to pick up the revelry on the street below. ‘WRC will lead up to its special New Year Eve program with a group of its regular attractions and the 7-11's, a new dance band, under direction of Duve Grupp. The Eveready hour pres- | entation will be a concert by a unique | glee club, directed by Reinald Wer- renrath, internationally famous bari- tone. The club is made up entirely of business executives and professional men. It is known as the Alumni Glee Club. The spirit of New Year eve also will manifest itself in the program of the Clicquot Eskimos. Another group of vaudeville stars and Leo Reisman's Orchestra will present the R-K-O hour. Aside from its special New Year eve program, WMAL has scheduled its | yegular Columbia attractions. _Oute standing among them are the Black- stone program, the Old Gold hour, with Paul Whiteman and his orchestra, and the Fada hour, with David Mendoza and his orchestra. Frank Crumit and Julia Sanderson are again co-starred in the Blackstone program, and will offer as “T tl song from the talking picture “Show of Shows.” The True Story offering will be dramatized version of “A: Daredevil Resolv Mrs. Henry D. Aller, chairman of the | safety committee of the District Con-| gress of Parents and Teachers, will speak from WOL this evening on “Teaching Safety to Children.” The! station’s musical features include a din- concert and a studio program ar- by Gertrude Lyons.
