PLEDGES TOCHEST NEARLYPADOF Collections on 1929 Lists Now 86.4 Per Cent of Total Subscribed. Washington will embark upon: the new Community Chest campaign with virtually no unpaid pledges from last year remaining on the books. The collections to date on the 1929 pledges 864 per cent of the total sub- scribed. ‘Ofcials of the organization say this s’ a particularly good showing in com- parison with other cities. “If payments continue at the present rate,” said El- wood Street, director, “Washington bids fair to establish a record for payment of pledges. “The National Capital made a splen- did showing in the oversubscription of its first campaign. In view of the fact that only eight months have elapsed since the close of the drive, the 86.4 per cent collection is remarkable. If this continues we will go into the next campaign with practically no unpaid pledges on the books.” Collections up to October 1 totaled $1,275,979.74, as compared to subscrip- tions of $1,501560.77. New pledges after the close of the campaign boosted this latter amount to $1,505,618.47, and this figure later was reduced by $18,- 418.36 in duplicated pledges, cancella- tions and reductions. This made a total of $1487,200.11 in valid pledges. During September $119,422.26 was paid in on pledges, leaving a balance of $211,220.37 unredeemed pledges, for which 10,978 statements were mailed | yesterday. . Arkansas Church Leader Dies.
