“LZECHS HOLD RITES T0 HONOR PATRON St. Wenceslaus’ Memory Cause of Fete to End September 30. Czechoslovakia is undoubtedly one of the most alive and enterprising coun- tries, big or little, in the world today. And one of her most conspicuous char- acteristics is her youthful exuberance of spirits. Only a year ago this little republic celebrated her tenth birthday anniversary, and with proud gestures exhibited all her signs of progress—her well developed industries, her emanci- pated educational system, her scientific accomplishments, her up-to-date form of government. This year the same little republic is uttering her pride in old-age and cele- brating the 1,000th anniversary of the death of her national patron saint, King Wenceslaus. With all the dignity and self-consciousness of an aristocrat, she is this year turning her eyes tempo- rarily away form the honors of modern practical feats and endeavoring to re- vive once more some of her past spir- itual glory. ‘The celebrations in honor of St. Wen- ceslaus began on May 15. day, September 28. King Wenceslaus was one of the earli- est Christian rulers of Bohemia. The exact date of his birth is not known. It was between 908 and 910. He died in 929, when only a little more than 20— murdered on the steps of the church in Stara Boleslav by the hirelings of his pagan brother, Boleslav the Cruel. They will | reach their climax on the .nnlvenlry' of St. Wenceslaus as & token of rever- ence. The exhibition is held in the St. Wenceslaus Hall, or throne of the Castle of Prague. This castle, 'like ‘80 many places and buildings in Central Europe and other parts of the Old World, represents the combination - of the old and the new. A thousand years ago it was the home of Bohemian kings. ‘Today it is the residence of Czechoslo- vakia's President, Mr. Masaryk. Masses Held Over Country. During August the anniversary took the form of special masres th the city of Prague and in the hundreds of St. Wenceslaus churches scattered all over the country. The skull of St. Wences- laus and certain other relics were car- ried in state from the castle to the Cathedral of 8t. Vitus in Prague. And there were many religious processions, particularly processions to the city of Stara Boleslav, the site of Wenceslaus’ death. ‘The height of the celebration will come in the four days from September 26 to 30. There will be a grand illumi- nation of the city then and a nightly display of fireworks in old-style lavish- ness. These final festivities are to open on the morning of September 26 with a solemn cratoric in the ancient but com- pletéd St. Vitus Cathedral of Prague. This is to be followed with a gov- ernmental recognition of the saint by a national religious celebration in front of the monument of St. Wenceslaus in the St. Wenceslaus Square in Prague. On_September 28, the anniversary of d MONTREAL Friday, September 27 Special Through Coach Train .00 Week-End Rouna EXcursion Trip the death of Wenceslaus, there is to be the greatest event of all—the consecra- tion of the cathedral. Film Being Made. A film of the life of St. Wenceslaus has been prepared for use in this four- day celebration at a cost of 3,000,000 kronen. It will be shown in all parts of the country and later be sent to Czechoslovakian groups in Americy and r countries. In America there are ut least 20 Czechoslovakian chuiches bearing the name of St. Wenceslaus— the largest one in Chicago. ' ‘This film if a ucmmmy production, will be one more means not only of pre- serving & cultural link between foreign groups in this country and abroad, but also of further enriching American lit- erature and life with a plece of Old World idealism. He is probably more fully the patron saint of his people than is the saint of any other nation. Everything that is truly Bohemian, truly Czechoslovak, to- day is bound to be named after him. One of the most popular legends pic- tures him as standing forever in the mountain of Blanik, with his knights beside him, waiting for the moment when his country may need him. His knights and their horses sleep while they wait. He himself stands erect and wide awake. Men and women of the present generation aver that they have seen him thus. During the World War the Austrian government forbade the Czechs to sing the St. Wenceslaus anthem, seeing in it a national protest and an instigation to revolution. The Czech soldiers who fought on the allies’ side carried St. ‘Wenceslaus’ banner and sang the strains of his anthem. The Czech peasants today. believe firmly that it was through this banner and this anthem that they gained their freedom. ‘The sophisticated people of the na- tion, while more skeptical of the mys- tical powers of ancient saints and kings, nevertheless share fully the national pride in St. Wenceslaus as an early ruler, saintly person and legendary fig- ure, They as well as the peasants and priests are taking an active part in the national celebration. Jeweled Sword Exhibited. ‘The anniversary program commenced with the opening of an exhibition of St. ‘Wenceslaus Cultus. In this are shown all the existing personal possessions of the saint—his jeweled sword, his lance, his banner with the black eagle that was the national symbol in his day, his armor and helmet. his bronze shirt of self-discipline, his haircloth garment of chastity. Besides these there are innumerable statues and paintings of him which have been made through the centuries.
