THE EVENING STAR, WASHINGTON, D. €., WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 4, 1929, SHITILEGRASHE AGAISTUTAHPEAK Eaker and Aide Escape Un- injured, Though Plane Is Damaged. By the Associated Press. SALT LAKE CITY, Utah, Septem- ber 4.—The third transcontinental re- fueling attempt of the Boeing mail plane Shuttle ended against the side of a mountain east of here yesterday when a stoppage in the gas line forced Capt. Ira C. Eaker and Lieut. Bernard Thompson to land. Neither pilot was injured and the damage to the’ plane, consisting of a broken wheel and wings, can be repair- ed, Capt. Eaker said. The two men walked to the nearest road and hailed a passing automobile, which brought them to Salt Lake short- ly after noon. “We were going fine until Monday night.” sald Capt. Eaker. The flyers left New York at 6:35 a.m. Eastern standard time, Sunday, and were re- turning East after piloting the Shuttle to Oakland, Calif. Motor Is Praised. “We received a bad weather report in Elko and were instructed to spend the night there. We circled over the airport all night and experienced no storms until we ran into a shower west of Salt Lake yesterday morning. “The plane behaved wonderfully. It | is one of the best I ever flew and very stable for night flying. The engine never missed a beat for over 100 hours.” ‘The pilots “got a little sleep,” Capt. Eaker said, taking turns at the con- trols and lying down on a bed on boards over the gas tanks. rienced in refueling after a diffi- | e culty with the gas hose, experienced on the eastward flight, had been elimi- nated. More than 3,000 gallons of gaso- line were transferred, ne said. Slight Accidents on Flights. “While refueling in flight is in a highly experimental stage, it is far more advanced than the airplane was a year after it was brought out,” Capt. Eaker stated. “Mechanically, refueling en- durance flights are feasible It is little accidents like this one that make them doubtful of accomplishment.” Officials of the Boeing Air Transport directing the salvaging of the plane in- dicated today that no further attempts woul’ be made soon to establish a transcontinental refueling endurance flight record. ATTEMPT IS ABANDONED. Manager Says Flight Has Added Much to Refueling Knowledge. NEW YORK, September 4 (#).—H. J. Adamson, operating manager for the transcontinental Shuttle flight attempt of Capt. Ira C. Eaker and Lieut Ber- nard Thompson, announced after the receipt of news of the flyers' forced landing near Salt Lake City, that the attempt would be abandoned for the present. Adamson said the flight had contrib- uted much to knowledge regarding re- fueling of heavy cargo planes in the air, adding that the successful land- ing in the rough country where Eaker and Thompson were forced down “is & credit to their airmanship.” _— CITY NEWS IN BRIEF. ‘TODAY.
