16 VOIDED LAWS MAY FORCE LEGISLATION Gov. Trumbull Expected to Call Extra Session of General Assembly. By the Associated Press. BRIDGEPORT, Conn, July 26— Legislative leaders and State officials | were united today in a belief that Gov. John H. Trumbull would call a special | session of the 1929 General Assembly to | repass 1,493 public and special aets| invalidated yesterday by a unanimous | decision of the State Supreme Court of Errors. | The decision, holding that all enacted | measures are void unless signed by the governor within three days after the adjournment of the Legislature, swept away acts adopted by seven General Assemblies and signed by Govs. Marcus | H. Holcomb, who went into office in 1915, and his successors, Govs. Everett J. Lake, Charles A. Templeton and the | incumbent, Trumbull, O 1,493 Bills Involved. All the 1493 bills, representing a small fraction of those adopted by the seven legislatures, had been given gubernatorial approval more than three g;sf after adjournment of the enacting es. Defendant Objects to 2,000-Mile Walk “Just to Be Hung.” By the Associated Press. SPOKANE, Wash,, July 26.— Sam Watson has refused to walk 2,000 miles to be hanged, and that is all there is to it. Watson, 69, confessed here re- cently to killing a man at Folsom, N. Mex., in 1893, but New Mexico authorities are not sufficiently in- terested in the incident to finance ‘Watson’s return for trial. Sheriff A. W. Tanner of Folsom telegraphed to the sheriff here that if the man wanted to come back and stand trial his case would be given consideration in its turn. ‘Watson said yesterday he had no money and certainly wasn't going to walk back “just to be hung.” VITAMIN D ENTERS COURT IN BATTLE Two Companies Are Using Steen- bock Method Unrightfully, Wis- consin Alumni Charge. Repassing Is Questioned. Allorr_wy General Benjamin Walling and Judge Raymond A. Jjohnson, Housc majority leader, said that a special ses- sion of the 1929 Legislature could repass the affected measures and they would be valid if the governor signed them within | three days after the session’s end. The | attorney general opined, however, that | one resolution, embracing all the 1,493 | acts, would not be constitutional, and | that the legislators would have to con- | sider each law separately. | Most of the invalidated acts were | passed during the Trumbull adminis- | tration. | TRANSPORT TO GAMBLING | SHIP CHARGED AGAINST 2 | California Authorities Move to Btop Activities of Boat Off Coast. By the Associated Press. LONG BEACH, Calif, July 26— | Delbert and Roy Lindsey, accused by | police of operating water taxis to the | gambling ship, Monfalcone, 12 miles off | the coast, were arrested here Wednes- | ay. Meanwhile, a second gambling ship, the Johanna Smith, continued opera- tion near the Monfalcone by transport- | ing its patrons from Wilmington, a Los Angeles suburb from where water taxis may run without molestation. | Unverified reports from the water front said owners of the Johanna Smith had incited Long Beach author- | ities to make the arrests in the hope | of stopping their rival's trade.
