MONTREAL, Quebec, June 15.—The | most important problem today con- fronting owners of central business df trict property, is proviskn of a tei minus for the automobile, which is coming & more rapidly increasing fa tor in metropolitan transportation. This declaration was made by Capt. M. W. McIntyre of Cincinnati at the twenty-second annual convention of the National Association of Bullding owx;en and Managers, held here this week. Capt. McIntyre pointed out the fact that, in most large cities throughout the United States, parking restrictions are becoming more stringent each year, and that in some of the larger cities down- town parking is entirely prohibited witlh the result that automobile owners are facing great difficulties in finding a place to park their cars. The solution of the problem, accord- ing to Capt. McIntyre, is in the con- struction of “skyscraper” garages, which he recommends should go as high as 10 stories. “The increasing use of automoblles for business purposes makes it imper- ative that the office bullding owners and managers take full recognition of the fact that a garage connection is es- sential to the successful management of the office building,” sald Capt. Mc- Intyre. “Passenger automobiles are in- creasing rapidly in all parts of the country. There are approximately 450 passenger cars in use for each 1,000 adults in the States Ofu\the M!ddlehA'-- lantic group; the Pacific group shows 736 cusn .nfi the average for the United States is 585 for every 1,000 adults. “The sutomobile public must be taken care of and parking facilities afforded the tenants in office buildings as well as a parking service for the tenants’ clientele. The sooner office W{gl:;: owners and managers e 1 stablish garage faciities, in connection with their office buildings, the better it will be for the buildings. A garage assists materially in renting office space. “In operaling & garage In conjunction with an office building the garage should be handled as » separate and distinct organization—not as a sideline.
