THE EVENING STAR, WASHINGTON, D. C, THURSDAY JUNE 463 GET DEGREES ATRITESATE.W.U. Large Class Hears Address by Dr. Meta Glass of Sweet Briar. Degrees were conferred upon 469 graduates of the several schools George Washington University last eve- ning at impressive exercises in the Washington Auditorium. An appeal for a broader conception of education to extend to the parents of pupils and col- lege students featured the commence- ment address of Dr. Meta Glass, presi- dent of Sweet Briar College. The trend toward specialization in education, as evidenced by lowering of standards for admittance to study for professional degrees, was sald by Mrs. lass to be not for the best in further- ing the aims of education. Funda- mentally, she said, education depends for success upon the ability and per- sonality of the student and the ability and personality of the teacher. Should Change Slowly. Progressives in education methods claim many helpful changes, she pointed out. On the other hand she asserted that a standard foundation of knowl- edge for parents as well as for children is necessary for their mutal develop- ment. ~ Progress in education is to be desired, she said, but educators should g0 slow in making material changes in approved methods. The graduates were presented for their degrees by the deans of their schools following the address of Mrs. Glass. Columbian College of the uni- versity had the greatest number of graduating members, 175. The exer- cises, marking the formal close of the university year, were introduced by four organ selections played by Adolf Torov- £ky, A. A. G. O. Following presentation of degrees, Dr. Cloyd Heck Marvin, president of the university, addressed the graduating classes. In behalf of the university Dr. Mar- vin expressed thanks for the generosity of alumni and friends, who through gifts have made it possible to add 20 Instructors to the staff in the last year. The staff numbers about 350, he said, for a student body of approximately 7.500 for all schools. Alumni number 10,000, he said. A large crowd was in attendance when the commencement procession got under way following the organ recital. The auditorium stage was profusely dec- orated with flowers and ferns. Dr. James Leven McLain, pastor of the Union Methodist Episcopal Church, of- fered prayer. The occasion was of especial significance to Dr. McLain. Especial mention was made of the fact that his twin sons, Gecrge Henry and John Edward McLain, were members of the graduating class of the School of Medicine. Smith W. Brookhart, jr., the son of the Senator from Iowa, received the de- gree of bachelor of arts. In addition to Columbian College, graduates of schools were as follows: School of Medicine, 61; School of Law, 80; engineering, 27; pharmacy, 4; edu- cation, 27; division of library sciences, 4; division of fine arts, 3;" Graduate School of Letters, 43. Twenty nurses received degrees. Of the 61 graduates in medicine, 30 vere announced as having qualified for wppointment as first lieutenants in the Medcal Corps, U. 8. A., Reserves. Degrees were conferred as follows: Presentation by Dean Hill of candi- dates for degrees in Columbian College. BACHELOR OF ARTS.
