THE EVENING STAR, WASHINGTON, D. U, TUESDAY, JUNE % " 79%9.. POLIGENAN FREED N WEBB DEAT Gilbert Not to Blame for Ac- cident Fatal to 83-Year- 0ld, Coroner’s Verdict. A coroner’s jury yesterday exonerated Policeman Harvey Gilbert of the tenth precinct of blame in connection with the death of Augustus P. Webb. 83 years old, of Laurel, Md., who died as the result of injuries sustained Friday night when he was run down by the | policeman’s automobile in front of 1448 Rhode Island avenue. According to three witnesses, Webb, who for many years was chief ma trate of Prince Georges County, was crossing the street in the middle of the intersection and became confused after he had reached the halfway mark in the street. The witnesses said that Mr. Webb hesitated for a few seconds and then started to run toward the curb, He collided with the left front fender of the policeman’s automobile WoonpwARD & LoTHROP and was knocked down. His death was_attributed to a fracture of the right leg and shock. | "Gilbert, who lives at 4117 Rhode Is- *land avenue northeast, said he was driv- | ing at a moderate rate of speed at the | | time of the accident, and that he| | sounded his horn when he saw the old | man start across the street. He said that he swerved his machine in an effort to avold the collision but was too_close to the curb. | “Policeman H. E. Brown, stationed at | the Traffic Bureau, testified that he e amined the brakes on Gilbert's autom bile and found that they were not up to the standard of efficiency required by | statute. The law requires, he said, that | the brakes of an automobile be able to | stop the machine within 50 feet at a | speed of 20 miles an hour, whereas | 60 feet were required to stop Gilbert's | machine at this speed. He expressed | the belief that grease on one of the brake drums and a defective brake rod | were responsible for the failure of the | brakes to function properly | | Boy Falls, Fracturing Wrist. | Chatham Nottingham, 13 years old, of | 11626 Montague street, fell from a tree | ne was climbing .on the reservoir | grounds at Sixteenth and Montague | stre terday evening and fractured | his left wrist.
