Spectal Dispatch to The Star NEW YORXK, May 2 Holders of | convertible bonds did not fare well to- | day. Nearly all of these issues were at | a lower price, which added to the bear- | Nh effect of last week's late decline. The new Southern Pacific convertible 4125 on the closing of the syndicate, dropped 23, points below the figure at on the part of stockhoders of the road. When the “rights” expired last Wed- nesday they had only a nominal value. Another conspicuously weak convert- ible was American Telephone & Tele- graph 4s, which declined a point, selling 15 points under the high of the year. International Telephone 41:s lost over a point and Missouri Pacific 5'2s nearly a point, with fractional declines in American I. G. Chemical 515 and American Inie'naiional Corporation | izs. There wac some recovery in these | G es <when the siock market rallied | from the drive agnist it around mid- | day. The favorable decision in the O'Fal- lon case brought a sharp rally in all the railroad convertibles. The high-grade issues were sluggish, making no response to the lower money rates with which the week opened. | Many of them have reacted from the April advance and are selling lower than at any time since bonds started to react. There is an extremely narrow market for inactive issues, which was | reflected in numerous declines of 1 to 3 | points last week, principally in the rails | and among underlying mortg.ages. Government issues today chowed de- clines of from lg to 14, the largest in the Treasury certificates. The shrinkage in the bonds of Cuban sugar producing companies continued | without evidence of support. Today the {two Cuba cane bonds were selling 20 | points under their high of the year, the | | Baragua 7'2s from 13 to 18 points down and Cuban Domincan 7155 off 14 points | from the year's best, Eastern Cuba 7 16 points: Oriente 7s, 13 points, and :wmenws Sugar 7s, 13! points. The concessions expected to be granted by the United States in order to make reparations settlements euier‘ were offset today by opposition from Belgium to the terms. Therefore, the foreign bond market was quiet and without & general trend. heavy decline that has taken place in recent weeks in German and Southeast European obligations, as well as in many of those of South and Central bond market should de in a position to_rally moderately, when and if the debt settlement becomes nmfutcry to all of the interested parties. TRADING IS LIGHT ATD.C. MARKET fUnfavorable Weather Causes| Slump in Volume of Buy- ing—Receipts Small. Unseasonable weather this morning | was not conducive to heavy trading. Trading seldom is brisk Monday morn- ings, many dealers having supplies held over in quantities sufficient to accom- modate consumers the first market day of the week. While yesterday's rain was not needed in the nearby country, according to growers, it did not last long enough to do any harm and will not affect receipts of Spring vegetables. Whole- salers along the country line had light receipts of country produce this morn- | ing, while commission merchants had plenty shipped-in stock. Strawberry Receipts. Strawberries continue to come from the Eastern Shore of Maryland in fairly large quantities, the choicest of the receipts finding ready sale, while some poorer stock trom other sections fail | to bring money enough to pay express charges. Dealers think the strawberry season soon will draw to a close. There will be few of the ever-bearing fruit in evidence until frost appears, according to growers, but they probably will not come in receipts heavy enough to quote prices. Huckleberries have been added to the list of early fruits in the local market, prices being low because of the plentiful receipts of other fruits. There are two indexes of market price movement. The first (“shares outstanding”) rep- resents all common ind: shares listed on the exchange, the importance of each stock being considered accord- | ing to the shares in existence or out- standing. The secdnd index (‘50 lead- | ers”) shows the price movement of the common industrial stocks most heavily dealt in during the week, this list changing weekly with the shifts in trading Ecpularln The “shares outstanding” index shows | what a substantially representative $100 worth of stocks in 1926 would now amount to if held unchanged since that vear. The “'50 leaders” index shows the result of reinvesting the $100 every wee‘}c: in the market favorites of that week. & The last column of the table gives the rate of return on the week’s 50 leaders at current prices. hares 80 Rate ut- Market 7 stand's Leadsrs Return Apiil av March average 1928 average Low ('28-'29) 1281 (Fab'28) l’eb’zh m-: zsx 1929, by Irving Fisher.) pi s National Family Group Stores chain shortly will be enlarged by the addition of xnothcr group of s (Copyrigh!
