NEW YORK, May 13.—Under the Theaviest general pressure since the March break, prices on the Curb Ex- change suffered a sharp setback today. ‘Weakness broke out at the opening and continued almost without a rally throughout the session. Volume in- creased on the reaction. Utilities Under Pressure. Stocks which had been going up rap- idly naturally came down the most. Electric Investors, after having ad- vanced 32 points, almost without inter- ruption last week, lost a third of that gain in a few minutes, recovering par- tially later. Similarly, wide fluctua- tions were witnessed in Electric Bond | & Share and most of the others. This is the| sixth time since November that the, ! market has reached those prices and i has fallen back. As on other occasions, the decline wnsi accompanied by high call money rates. Memphis Natural Gas extended its improvement of last week and sold to the best price on the move. Aviation Stocks. As a group the aviation stocks fought the decline most stubbornly and were featured by new highs in Transconti- nental Transport and North American. Fokker jumped almost 6 points on the initial sale, recovering all of Saturday’s break, but later weakened again. Bendix, Irving Air Chute and Aviation Corporation held up best. Loan Discussion Continues. ‘The discussion of the brokers’ loan situation which has so long held the attention of the country, continued to bring forth sharp differences of opinion. Prof. O. M. W. Sprague of Harvard asked for an immediate advance in the rediscount rate, belleving that the flow of funds into the stock market will be injurious to business. e Harvard Economic Society believes that the pres- ent level of call rates will remain until mid-July, at which time an acute shortage of credit and still higher call rates may develop as_ business credit needs again increase. Both views seem to assume that brokers’ loans cannot be_reduced except by drastic methods. E. H. H. Simmons, president of the Stock Exchange, defended brokers’ loans. In speaking of the trend toward common stock financing, he held the Federal Reserve banks themselves re- sponsible for the flow of money into brokers’ loans during the past year. His theory is that the money tightening licy of the Reserve banks caused igh money rates originally. Then, because they did not clarify their po- sition, large lenders, being uncertain of future developments, turned to call loans, since they are the safest form of security known and yield the tween New York and San Francisco on | ‘Wednesday. | Sales of vitaglass increased mate- | rially in 1928 over 1927, says P.
