Ey the Assoclated Pre:s. MEMPHIS, May 11.—The §outhem Baptist Convention gave its home mis- sfons board a vote of confidence yes- sgreed to continue the work jeopard- ized last year by the defalcations of it imprisoned treasurer, Clinton S. Carnes. A special committee eppointed to consider various suggestions for reor- ganizing the board notified the conven- | tion this afternoon that it reccmmended | the adoption of the board's official re- port. The report asked that the board be continued, that its expenditures be sharply reduced, and that no change | be made in the present methods of | handling home missions. | Dr. Frank H. Tripp of St. Louis, Mo., | offered as a substitute his proposal that | the home and forelign missons boards be combined, and that the headquar- | ters now maintained for the home | board in Atlanta and for the foreign board at Richmond b~ removed to Memphis. He was defeated after Dr. Sam F. Hudson of Red Springs, N. C., lost & motion to abolish the home board and have the executive committee liquidate all assets except those the foreign board might assume and man- age. Hours of debate ended a day during ‘which the convention approved a South- wide campaign for the Baptist Bible In- atitute at New Orleans, and firmed its belief in ‘“the faith once and for all delivered to the saints.” | ‘Willlam D. He said only one denomi on, the Methodist Episcopal South, had a com- bined board, “and that's an experi- ment,” he said. Dr. Tripp charged that the board was | “maintaining & country club” at El| Paso, Tex., during his argument that present methods were inefficient. Dr. F. S. WASHINGTON, D@ SATURDAY, MAY 11, 1928, The Church—God's Lighthouse BY DR. HARVEY BAKER SMITH, Fastor of Columbia Heights Christian Church. T is said that institutions are the lengthened shadows of men. The greater the character, the greater the institution must be. The church is the one great visible expression of the divine purpose of God in humanity as revealed in the word of God, the werk of God and the Son of God. The church has been the trustee of the word of God. The Bible has been on her pulpits, in her home and in the hearts of her members through the ages. To the church the Bible is God 's will and the constitution which provides both the message ace and the authority of its declaration. After all the tests %flstory the Bible stands today as the most Godlike book of the ages. The church believes it is divine and so heralds its teaching. The church believes that she is doing the work of God. All activities must have a channel. channel of The church seeks to be the the ministries of divine grace and service to the world. To feed the hungry, clothe the naked, heal the sick and all the multitude of min- istries which are suggested by a needy world, these are the daily tasks of the church. Other groups have seen the marvel of the Christian program and patterned similar service programs after it. But the inspiring power has been from the church. The church is the place where in wor- soug DR. SMITH the Son of God is discovered to the and in the preached word He is pro- cldimed to men. He said, “I am the light of the world.” No light has ever approached the glory of His message and the grace of His person in meeting humanity’s age-old cry for a sense of spoke to the people of all ages. of all groups of mankind. God. He He lived in the life and needs He is the spiritual ocean whose waves touch all the shores of humanity's need. The church is the agent of His message and the lives of Christians are the instruments of His Gospel. The work of the church is the projection of His life. Paul says “That the church might be used to display the powers and authorities cf the heavenly realms.” I LUTHER LEAGU I ‘The Luther League of the District of Columbia will be the guest May 14 of the Luther League of Baltimore and Vicinity.
