ALEXANDER WOLP, Trustee, WILLIAM B. WOLF, ‘Attorney for Trustee. 3.6, 3 1331 G Street N.W. C pe . e f - - | Trouble mn MCXICO L ) The patriot of Mexico who would re- lieve his country’s woe by giving gov- ernment a jolt, and setting up a big re- volt, is taking chances so immense that one must doubt his common sense. For if he wins and takes the place from which the ruler had to chase, he scarce- ly dons his uniform, and gets his new seat good and warm, before some patriot will rise with martial ardor in his eyes, to chase him from his hard-won seat, and put him down in Crooked street. And if he fails to overthrow the tyrant ruling Mexico, he will not have an- other chance to draft an army and ad- vance. His followers will fade away upon his first disastrous day, when fizzles out his fine revolt, and he'll be chasing like a colt, all unattended and alone, to reach the border's safety zone. And if he’s caught ere he can iand upon another country’s strand, there’s no red tape to interfere with winding up his high carcer. He’s backed against the nearest wall and plugged with bullets large and small. No lecture campaigns can he wage; he may not elevate the stage, and no chautauqua crowds will cheer the story of his bright career. Since he is dead he can't make good among the stars of Hollywood. This is, alas, the common fate of those who brave the tyrant’s hate and strive to make true freedom grow among the dunes of Mexico. I'd rather let the tyrants thrive, and saw my wood, and stay alive. WALT MASON. (Copyright, 1929.) State Had Two Capitals. Rhode Island originally had prac- tically as many capitals as it had towns. The General Assembly met in circuit, first in one town and then in another. As time went on, however, the Legisla- ture grew in size and the accommoda- tions in the smaller towns became in- adequate. The meetings were held in fewer and few towns, until finally the General Assembly met only at New- port and Providence, says the Path- finder Magazine. For many years the State had these two capitals. It was customary for the Legislature to open its annual session in May at Newport and after a few days to adjourn for a more extended session at Providence, beginning in the following January. After the completion of the State House at Providence in 1900 the Constitution was so amended as to dispense with the Newport session of the Legislature. AUCTION SALES. FUTURE DAYS. T was one of those days when town folks feel an urgent longing to get out where the grass is green and the trees are budding. Luckily, Tom Scott had a half-holiday, so when he quit work at noon he hurried home to Ellen and Elizabeth, with the suggestion that they take the seedy old roadster and strike out for the coun- try. It happened that Ellen had baked a'pan of rolls and a loaf cake, so they had only to pack the basket. Away they went, three in the seat, Tom driv- ing, Ellen watching Elizabeth, Elizabeth watching everything. An hour later they came to a dirt road, into which Tom turned. Pres- ently they found a lane branching off from the dirt road. The lane led to an old house way off in the field under a gray maple. Ellen wanted to go there, but Tom had caught a glimpse of a creek, so he kept to the road until he reached the stream, where he parked, and they all got out. It was lovely there beside the clear water. Tom fixed up a fishing pole and line for Elizabeth and, though it was only a birch wand, a length of twine and a bent pin, she nearly caught a shiner. But Ellen sat on the grass and gazed at the sky and the hills and the lovely flats. The old house under the maple was within her vision and she studied it thoughtfully. Who had built it? How old was it? Why had it been deserted? She asked herself these ques- tions. Poor old house, with its broken windows like wistful, half-blinded eyes, And the sturdy door, with the worn door stone before it. The house must once have been loved; it must once have housed happy hearts, young hearts, brave hearts. But now it was only a broken-hearted dwelling, wanted by no one and neglected until it must crumble in Edecay. llen had been a country girl befor she went to the city to flndy \gnrk. Sh: loved the city now because it had given her Tom and Elizabeth, a home and a good living. She knew what they did to an oltl house to make it habitable—new shingles and panes of glass, a brace here, a clapboard there. And within paint and paper and whitewash, With curtains at the windows and geraniums peeping between the white folds, with a wisp of smoke curling from the chim- Dney, the sound of a woman singing, a & broken heacied hosce oinE: cien = ous ""sfl‘m’& : ¢ could be made ing with her back against a tre trunk, Ellen was smrtledg::)ub of hifi deep, pleasant reverie by a rattling burst of thunder. My grandfather, Jim Borden—I was named for him—built it. T was born in it. My parents lived here until they passed away. I had married some years befere that and built the house where I now live with my family. It is a long time since any- body lived here. And it's a shame, for it's a good stout old domicile yet. Wouldn't you think some city fellow wouid like a place of this kind to spend his Summers in?" Tom and Ellen exchanged a glance., Then Tom laughed. “There's an idea. Instead of our go- {ing to my brother Bill's camp this Summer, what say, Ellen and Elizabeth, to our squatting here? After my vaca- ltilan ends I can run back and forth to my work in the car.” T should love it of all things,” cried Ellen. “Elizabeth, you can keep youf playthings in the corner cupboard. Wi will move cut just a few necessas things.” After the food was eaten to the las| crumb Tom and Ellen and Elizabeth got into the car and started for home while Jim Borden retired to his own white house behind the knoll. Satis- factory arrangements had been made as to rent and privileges. As they rode away down a rain-sweet- ened lane Elizabeth looked back and shook her little finger at the house. Don't you dare run away, for we are coming back! she cried. And the old house, the heartbroken house, seemed to reply with a smile, ‘The End. (Copyright. 1929.)
