She was at anchor while | health and_customs officers inspected | her crew of 39. | Because of a heavy fog, the liner was |moving _slowly when the freighter loomed dead ahead. Before the Cristo- bal Colon could reverse her engines, her | stem was buried in the side of the Smnller ship. Radio calls from both ships brought a fleet of tugs and other harbor craft. ' | Capt. Eduardo Fano of the Spanish, | liner heid the prow of his vessel in the gash in the River Orontes and nosed | her onto the flats. The freighter was | settling rapidly as water poured into | her No. 4 hold. |, The lier put back to her pier. where | it was found several broken plates of | the freighter had pierced her bow. | No one was injured in the craski, and Capt Fano said there had been no con- | | fusion among the liner’s 1,000 passen- | gers, the majority of whom were from | Cuba and Mexico en Toute to Vigo, Spain.
