FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla,, April 17. w-Testimony that 5,000 persons are en- gaged in the liauor traffic at Miami created a sensation at yesteraay's hear- ing for three members of the crew of the Coast Guard boat alleged to have used machine-gun and pistol fire to halt & rum-runner as it fled up the Miami River early Sunday morning. Stray shots were reported to have struck buildings ashore, also a houseboat moored at the river’s edge. He declared boats frequently were load- ed with “swamp liquor” at Hialeah, a western suburb; floated out to the bay and run back as “imported stuff.” 1,000 on Miami Beach. Prince_estimated that of the 5,000 ; persons he said were engaged in the Tum business, 1,000 were on Miami Beach, 500 in Coral Gables and a large number in Hialeah. He gave Miami's prokimity to the British Bahamas as the chief reason for the actjvity in the liquor traffic and the problems of en- forcement officers. Harold Lopes, lookout on the Govern- ment boat, testified that all three of its crew fired at the rum-runner during the chase. He said he himself had fired several shots from a pistol, &s had Boatswain J. R. Ingraham, in command of the boat, and that Motor Machinist's Mate Sam Jones had sent approximate- 1y 40 machine-gun bullets at the craft. Lieut.
