DECLINE REPORTED INBANK DEPOSITS December 31 Figures Under October Call Due to Heavy Year End Withdrawals. BY EDWARD C. STONE. Controller of the Currency John W. Poole issued his first bank call today, asking for a condition statement from the local banks as of December 31, 1928. Eighteen of the first 25 local banks which it was possible to reath in the limited time before going to press, showed declines in deposits over the figures reported following the call of | October 3 last. Washington bankers had been pre- dicting a decline in total deposits on the last day of 1928 in comparison with the October figures, which shattered all | previous records in the Capital, so that | today's returns will cause little sur- prise. The main reason assigned by bankers for the decline is the large withdrawals of deposits at the end of the year tc avoid the personal tax placed on funds in the banks on January 1. Many de- positors curtail outstanding notes at this time, buy large blocks of Govern- ment bonds and make other withdrawals. Other Large Withdrawals Made. The payment of heavy Christmas bills also makes a dent in bank deposits of no small proportions. The payment of the Christmas savings club funds causes another drain, as much of this money has not yet been returned to the banks. It is expected, however, that within a few days deposits in Washing- ton will be back to the rema:'‘able figures of October, if not above them. Today's deposit reports show that all groups—national banks, trust companies and savings banks—fared about the same in the falling off in their total deposits. Some banks in all groups showed gains. For the first time the Riggs National Bank included the deposits of the re- cently merged Farmers & Mechanics National Bank of Georgetown in its totals. Riggs reported a gain today over the October 3 call. The Farmers & Mechanics reported deposits of Open. High. Low. Close. BY GEORGE T. HUGHES, Special Dispatch to The Star. NEW YORK, January 4—Recovering from the shock of the unexpectedly large increase in brokers’ loans, today's stock market closed higher after a morning of weakness and a midday ? | period of irregularity. Railroad and cop- per stocks were the leaders of the ad- vance with many industrial specialties participating. The steels did little and the motors were lower, but the moves that attracted attention were all on the side of advance. Sentiment. was helped by the drop in call money from the renewal rate of 8 per cent, first to 7 and then to 6 per cent. Among the late features were Columbia Graphophone, Pillsbury Flour, International Nickel new, Postum Co. among the industrials and New Haven, Western Maryland antl Great Northern preferred among the rails. The Street had not anticipated any such showing as that revealed by the Stock Exchange and by the Federal Reserve compilations on_brokers’ loans. Various reassuring explanations were offered, but the fact remained. More and more, also. it was stressed in spec- ulative circles that the market had been going ahead a fortnight without any real correction, and that the technical pesition had been correspondingly weak- cned.
