FIN FOREIGN BOND LIST SHOWS WEAKNESS German and Latin American Issues Being Sold for Tax Purposes. BY CHARLES F. SPEARE, Special Dispatch Lo The Star NEW YORK, December 21.—The sit- uation in bonds at the end of the year is; in many individual issues, the reverse of that in stocks. Bonds are well below the price of a year ago, while stocks are much above the level of that period. “This difference plays an important part in the current movements of bonds. For this reason, the holder of bonds representing rather unpromising situ tions is inclined to sell them and take | his loss for income tax purposes. On the other hand the holder of the average active stock when he sells today has to pay a tax on the profit realized. Not a little of the heaviness of the bond mar- ket this month is due to this kind of liquidation, and with money rates grow- ing firmer, additional pressure is exerted against the bond list, The selling for income tax purposes has been conspicuous in various foreign issues, notably Germans, Which were weak again today. and in about a score of this year's new South and Central American offerings. In the domestic list it has appeared in half a dozen in- dustrials affected by poor carnings and in the rails conspiculously in the Sea- board Air Line and Florida East Coast point further to 77. At that compared with a high of the ¥ i 91', and were on a 6.65 per cent in- come ba: The outstanding amount is $45,000,000 issued in series between September, 1924, and March, 1926, at prices from 943, to 98. The proceeds of the issues were used for additional track and equipment facilities. Bankers faentified with the road today expressed complete confidence in the bonds, which are subject to only $12,000,000 of first 4158, Prices for convertible issues were Jower most of the session. Andes Cop- per s lost 3': points, International Telephone 4! came down 2 points from yesterday's high record and Ana- conda Copper 7s were fractionally low er, as were Dodge 6s and International Cement 5s. ‘The 8 per cent rate for call money, together with the withdrawal of the largest buyers from the market, influ- enced slightly lower prices in high- grade corporation bonds, United States Liberty first 41.s sold close to par and then rallied. Treasury certificates were heavy. In the foreign list, in addition to declines in German descriptions, there were substantial losses in some of the bonds of smaller South and Cen- tral American states and provinces and a somewhat ragged price list through- out the active European group. NEW YORK, December 21.—Higher prices were the rule on the Curb Ex- change today, with the new Ford Mctor Co., Ltd., the outstanding feature. There was every indication that the demand for the stotk had by no means heen satisfied and that much of the buying was for the account of a short interest. Firestone Tire was in demand again. ‘The sudden run-up in Celanese Cor- poration common followed announce- ment that Theodore F. Golf, bass ball and foot ball have been very successfully played at night in the glow of a modern outdoor lighting sys- tem, and now trap shooting has been 97%% | added to the list. Under midnight skies and 2,000,000 candlepower in electric floodlights, three veteran trap shooters, the oldest of whom was 81, broke any- where from 19 to 23 clay pigeons out of a possible 25. This happened at the first night-time trap shoot meet ever held, a gallery of 400 spectators looking on. The night shoot took place this Fall on the range of the Lynn Fish and Game Association of Lynn, Mass. Subse- quently the range was thrown open to others, and William Hill of Bridgeport, Conn.,, made a perfect score of 25 hits out of 25 birds. ‘Welding Process. ‘The welding process as applied to the construction of buildings has many advantages. It not only eliminates the nolsy rat-tat-tat of the riveter, always a source of disturbance to the sur- rounding district, but is said to be cheaper, quicker and more reliable. One ‘electric welding outfit can do the work of four men using the riveting- gun method. Fewer tools are required and no rivets are used in the welding process, both items representing another saving. The only tool used in the process is a welding machine. Before actually welding together two girders they are first bolted together in order to fix them in a secure and accurate position. This is done usually by means of angle iron supports and clamping plates. ‘With the girders in position, the welder 1s started. Steel is fused with steel and becomes a solid mass which hardens almost instantly, after which the bolts and angle irons are removed. Careful tests have shown that welded :‘l:;lers will stand up etter than those ted 1OROtREN) vy i et NEW YORK CURB MARKET Received by Private Wire Direct to The Star Office Following 1s & list of stocks and bonds traded in on the New York Curb Market today: Sales INDUSTRIA! in hundreds. By the Associated Press. NEW YORK, December cotton market opened today unchanged to a decline of 11 points, under liquida- tion or realizing and Southern selling. The offerings were attributed partly to the relatively easy ruling of Liverpool, while there were reports of an easier spot basis in some sections of Texas. After selling off to 20.03 for January and 20.02 for May, or about 11 to 13 points net lower, however, the market steadied on covering. The decline also seemed to have brought in a little buy- ing on trade limits. Prices steadied up a few points from the lowest, and the market was fairly active, with the tone steadier at the end of the first half hour. : Private cables reported hedging and liquidation in Liverpool, and said there was a fair inquiry for cotton cloths from Bida, but that many offers were unworkable. CORN PRICES FIRM IN EARLY TRADING Wheat and Oats Also Steady. Country Offerings Are Light. 21.—The | By the Associated Press. CHICAGO, December 21.—Reports that farmers are selling only enough corn to supply Christmas money helped give firmness to corn prices today and to steady wheat and oats. Country offer- ings of corn to arrive today continued light and cash houses here were buyers of future aeliveries, A sl Opening *at a shade decline fo el advance, corn later showed all around gains. Wheat started a shade lower to 3 up and held near to the initial range. Provisions were easy. Despite favorable weather for move- ment of the corn crop, receipts of corn in Chicago today totaled just 120 cars, and at Kansas City the arrivals fell b low 100 cars, hardly a third as much as on the corresponding day last year. Under such circumstances, previous speculative sellers of corn switched rather generally to the purchase side of the market, and a house with foreign connectlons also was conspicuous as a buyer. Upturns here in wheat prices were in- fluenced somewhat by Liverpool reports of absence of selling pressure abroad. Large shipments of wheat from Aus- tralia to non-European countries, India in particular, was a feature. Besides, Italy was reported to be in the market today for the Durum variety of wheat. The September hurricane blew over an old tree which has stood for 125 years in Miramer Hill, San Juan, Porto Rico, and which has long been regnrd-| ed as a landmark. The tree is an In- dian laurel, a member of the fig family, and withstood the gale for a long time, but finally it toppled over. The fate of the tree concerned so many persons that the United States forestry officials on duty in the vicinity set the tree up again, and it seems to have taken on a new life so that in the course of a few years it will be in better condition than ever before. Girls Appropriated Tuxedo. One of the recent social functions of fashionable London was a ball called “The Dream of Fair Women,” in which the feminine part of the gathering exer- cised the widest originality in the de- lsigning of their garments, which were meant to_anticipate the styles of the future. One of the most pronounced “hits” was the adoption of the Tuxedo by two girls, whose plain black and white stood out in strong contrast with the other costumes, many of which were very brilliant. The result was that the idea was immediately taken up and women appeared at other functions in the masculine Tuxedo. The fad is likely to spread around the world. Great American. Elihu Burritt, born in Connecticut In 1810, became known as “the learned blacksmit! He visited England and founded a soclety for the suppression of warfare and was an advocate of a high court of nations.
