10 BIG LUMBER FIRE HITS PURGELLVILLE Second of Kind This Year Wipes Out Case Bros. Plant at $60,000 Loss. Epecial Dispatch to The Star. PURCELLVILLE, Va., November 29. —Fire of unknown origin, discovered about 10:45 o’'clock last night, destroy- ed the Case Bros. lumber plant here at a loss of between $60,000 and $70,- 000, partly covered by insurance. Under similar circumstances, and about the same hour of the night the Popkins lumber plant was destroyed January 8, this year, at a loss of $40,- 000, only a small quantity of lumber being saved. A storage warehouse, 50 by 220 feet; & lumber shed, 18 by 150, and the office building and planing mill of the Case plant were destroyed in the fire last night, which attracted hundreds of per- sons and was stubbornly fought for two hours. Three Homes Saved. Firemen of Leesburg aided the Pur- cellville department and nearby homes were saved, including cottages of Mrs. G. F. Taylor, Walter Good and Arthur | Davis. The lumber establishment was | on the north side of the Washington & Old Dominion Railroad, and thus was separated from the business sec-| tion of the town, which probably re- duced the extent of damage many thousands of dollars. Two carloads of fine lumber and a new delivery truck arrived but a few days ago at the lumber yard and were consumed by the flames. The insur- ance, said by John Case, a member of the firm, to approximate 75 per cent | of the damage, did not cover the new | truck and newly unloaded lumber. Plant to Be Rebuilt. Without delay, it is said, the Case Bros. will rebuild the plant, a large | volume of business being on the books, much of which, however, may be lost because of the lateness of the season. The Popkins plant was rebuilt shortly after the fire of last January. The Case plant covered three acres. Little evidence of the buildings was to be seen there this morning. Around the charred ruins hundreds gathered, this being 2 holiday with few persons at work. Furniture which had been Play Built Around Lindbergh Is Ready For Presentation By the Assoclated Press. PARIS, November 29.—A dra- matic apotheosis of Col. Charles A. Lindbergh from the pen of the versatile French writer, Sacha Guitry, was given a dress re- hearsal at the Chatelet Theater last night. President Domergue, Pierre Marraud, minister of pub- lic instruction, and M. Laurent- Eynac, minister of aviation, were present. A number of prominent Americans were also in the audi- ence, and the novel entertain- ment seemed to be greatly to their taste. President Doumergue was much amused at the performance of his stage double when he received Col. Lindbergh at the Elysee Pal- ace. The play will be given its first public performance tonight. BUSINESS MARKS DAY Banks and Stores Thanksgiving and Schools Qut Until Monday. Special Dispatch to The Star. —Thanksgiving day is being observed in Prince Georges County by the closing of banks and suspension of business generally. Schools closed yesterday and will not reopen until Monday. Special services are being held in many churches and there will be numerous public dinners, dances and other functions in addition to the usual family reunions. In Hyattsville there was a union service this morning in the First Methodist Episcopal Church South, in which the congregations of that church, the First Presbyterian, the First Bap- tist and Memorial Methodist Episcopal Churches took part. There was special music by the combined choirs of the various churches. The Rev. D. Hobart Evans, pastor of the Presbyterian Church, delivered the sermon. The offering will go to the Associated Charities of Hyattsville and vicinity, which was formed at the union services participated in by the same churches last year and which has done much to relieve distress among the poor in the community during the past year. Rowley Found Guilty in Police Court. Glenroy H. Toombs, 28 years old, accused of second offense illegal pos- session of liquor, and Frank Milton Rowley, 23 years old, charged with first {ofle'nse, were each found guilty by a Police Court jury under Judge John P. McMahon in Police Court. They will be sentenced Saturday. The men were arrested by Sergt. George M. Little and his vice squad as they were making a “delivery” in Ball's court on October 22. On October 29 Rowley was again arrested on a posses- sion char-:, and will be tried on that offense December 4. Toombs was first | convicted on May 15. The men were prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney R. F. Camalier. |Judge Isaac R. Hitt of illegal sale and torney Walter M. Shea, who prosecuted the case, produced evidence to show that on September 4 Policeman Mostyn of the first precinct made a “buy” from Tebeleff at his residence, The testimony of a police officer that {in the 1400 block of Sixteenth street and bought liquor there caused Judge McMahon yesterday to overrule a mo- tion to suppress the evidence charging Odell with second offense sale and possession. The motion to suppress, argued by Attorneys Whalen and O'Connell, was based on the contention that the prem- ises were raided without a warrant, and that no “buy” was obtained by the police. It was Odell’s wife, who was acquitted by United States Commissioner Need- ham C. Turnage, that led to the arrest of Marion F. Lee, the police informer used against her, on a charge of per- jury.
