Congress will be asked at its coming | sesslon to authorize a new design for | the presant Congresional Medal of | | Honor, which has bezn chanctemed‘ | by Dr. Charles Moore, chairman of tne | National Commission of Fine Arts, as | “a disgrace to any civilized naticn.” The new design has been approved by | th> comm'ssion and now is before the | chief of staff of the Army for final indorsement. The new medal was patterned by | | Paut Manship of New York, The :tar | hangs from one point and the gencral | form has bean made convex, as is Lie cas2> with the higher honor medals of the leading nations. A head of Co- lumbia, the emblem of liberty, has been | used to replace that of Minerva, which is on the present medal, and this has h;e{: r’tmde to face to the right instcad | of left. A reverse of the medal has for fl.s) chief feature a simple’ American shield. | The pendant from which the star em- | blem and its surrounding laurel leaves hangs, contains an eagle with out- stretched wings and through this show, at_points, cannons and battle axes. Mr. Manship submitted his design to | the War Department in 1919, and it has been under confidentidl considera- | tion since. It was his contention, in which he is supported by the National Commission of Fine Arts, that the present Congressional Medal of Honor was open to serious objections from the point of view of the medalist. The star hangs from two points in- stead of one in the present medal, and the green oak leaves thereon ‘conflict with the laurel wreath and confuse the general design. Complaint has been further made that the old medal was both inartistic and mechanieally weak, and the miniature model of the eagle supporting the star seems to be having its neck puned by the ring attached to! the hea CITY CLUB ?nosnm. “Harmony Night” Presentation ‘Will Be Given on Wednesday. They will be assisted by Helen Jane Lemar and her troups of dancers. Mrs. Paul Bleyden will play the. orchestral parts on the piano. Ten City Club Syncopators will open the show. The second part of the program is to be devoted to Edith Reed and her entertainers. Leroy Thayer and a number of girls will complete the program.
