SPEARE. Special Dispatch to The Star. NEW YORK, October 30.—The third | day of call money renewals at 7!2 per | cent again failed to disturb the market for high-grade bond issucs. There was | some_accumulation in them at prices | | that have not prevailed for months. United Statcs Liberty first 3!2s sold | a full point above the recent low. Such high-grade bonds as Union Pacific first !4s, Northern Pacific 3s, Philadelphia Electric 41:s, Columbia Gas 5s and Bal- | timore & Ohio 6s were fractionally | higher. Frisco prior lien 4s wuched’ 90 and were within a quarter point of 4, per cent bonds of this road. Speculative issues did not do so well and were influenced by the uncertain trend of stocks. During the greater part of the session the normally active mining and oil convertibles were quiet at_prices only slightly above those at yesterday’s closing. Dodge 6s sold back to the level at which the big movement in them began a few weeks ago, and which carried them to 109%. Cuba Cane Sugar 8s were off 1 point. There was some heaviness on moderate sales in industrial specialties such as Na- tional Dairy Products 5%s and Reming- ton Rand 5Y5s. The foreign department contained a number of interesting movements. Some of these were due to competition with ‘the $19,900,000 offered for Oriental De- velopment Co. 5s at 90. This price and the yield of 6.24 per cent caused a further decline in the old 6s, which are still selling' on’' a lower basis than the 5l25. Both bonds are non-callable and are guaranteed by the Japanese govern- ment.. The 6s were brought out in 1923 at 92, and this year have sold’as high as 105. They are now below 98. City of Tokio 515s, also guaranteéd by Japan, declined half, and the government 61%s were slightly lower,. Is Also Extended in Economy Campaign. BY J. C. ROYCE. Special Dispatch to The Star. NEW YORK, October 30.—Profit margins must be widened, and it does not matter on which side of the busi- ‘ness fabric the widening takes place: That is the. conclusion ‘ that “big pro- ‘ducers ‘have reached all over the country. One of the three largest corporations in the world—the United States Steel Corporation—-and its subsidiaries, have just concluded a' period devoted to an attempt to “keap the waste basket of the industry emipty.” - The : results; will add hundreds of thousands_of dollars annually to the net income of the: eorporation. It will ‘'permit the sale of goods at figures ad- 'vantageous to the ‘consumer and will Istimulate. consumption and activity in a s of supplemental lines. The largest- saving- made in this period was in time, and time is money, not- fige uratively but actually. + With wages high and selling prices low, waste has been the deciding factor between profit and loss in many con- cerns. The margin has been widened by efficiency of machinery and equip- ment, by increase in personal effective- ness of employes and by utilization of by-products. B . The meat packers, for example, are utilizing every by-product, down to the long hairs in calves’ ears. Waste has .been turned into profit by the use of gases from cement kilns and blast Jfurnaces. These are utilized to produce heat, light and power, and the 25 per .cent of . the coal which went up in ,smoke in. the old beehive coke ovens now is turned into by-products almost .as valuable as the coal itself, including tar, ammonia sulphate, liquid ammonia and. benzol, About half the gas is used -to heat the new by-product coke, ovens Athenrlnsech;es‘ i last furnace , once a problem. for disposal, is used in the manufacture of e e e effo) owever, have been directed at the oflfie and executive side of the business. Wdstes have been traced o traditional methods of management, surplus of labor, ‘lack of labor-saving .devices, lack of standardization of forms -and spoilage of materials. It has been found that elimination of waste in offices does not' consist in using short fiencfls and saving paper eand ink.
