FINANCIAL, THE EVENING STAR WASHINGTON, D. O, TUESDAY, 20NDS CONTINUE DOWNWARD MOVE Many New Lows—Govern- ment List Has Another Reaction Today. BY CHARLES F. SPEARE. | Special Dispateh to The Star NEW YORK, May 29.—With today's | decline the average of the domestic bond market was 11> points under that of the first of the month. There were { many new low prices for the year in |the better grade mortgages, including | Atchison 4s, Baltimore & Ohlo 4s, | Union Pacific 4s, Northern Pacific 4s, | Southern Pacific 4!;s. Great Northern 7s and some of the 4!> and 5 per cent public utilities and industrials. There was also another reaction in he United States Government issues. | For the first time this vear the fourth Libexty 4!3s broke below 102. They | have been as high as 104 in the last | few months. The first 41;s about du- | plicated their previous’ low of 10134 nd the long-term Tressury certificates were easier This was to be expected in view of the prospect of new Treas- ¢ financing on a basis more attrac- e to the mmpor{r\' borrower than vields on the outstanding bonds and rv,ou-s. Readjustment of Prices. The high money rates have brought a readjustment in the prices not only of corporation issues, but in those of municipalities and States. A number of these have been marked down to a 4 per cent basis. It has been diffi-. cult for borrowers on tax-exempt se- curities to obtain satisfactory bids. Some of these bids have been made purposely low in order to avoid the possibilities of a dealer being hung up with unsalable bonds in a declining market, The feature of the day was the sur- prising rise in Dod!e 6 per cent de- bentures. From 863, the low of the year, where they sold yesterday, they advanced st 1dily until at 95 they were 2'> points above the year's pre- vious - high. This coincided with a sharp advance in the preferred stock, though a dull market for the class “A" stock, into which the bonds may be convertible at $50 a share. Of the orig- inal $75,000,000 issue brought out three years ago at 99, $15,000,000 have been exchanged into class “A” stock, and | about $3.000.000 retired by the sinking {fund. While Dodge 6s were rising, | Goodyear 55 were being offered a point under yesterday's closing. Industrial List Heavy. ‘The industrial list generally was heavy. The copper convertibles de- clined, rallied and then eased off again. Beet Sugar 6s lost a point, Lorillard 5s over a point, Consolidation Coal a point, Youngstown Shett & Tube 5s were in free supply at par and there were losses ranging from % to 3 in most of the local tractions. It was a difficult market in which to sell the recently offered low-coupon | issues. Prisco 41:5 were off nearly a point from Monday’s price and at the lowest since the syndicate was dis- solved. Wabash 413s were likewise heavy. 8t. Farmers’ Market and nearby whole- sale houses this morning presented as attractive a display of fruits and vege- tables as has ever been offered retailers in this city and buyers were out in large numbers, Strawberry growers in the Eastern || Shore of Maryland and Virginia and Norfolk, Va., sections landed thousands of crates of first-quality berries here this morning, Emcu(‘,ally glutting the market, and wholesalers were anxious to get rid of supplies, tomorrow being a holiday. Wholesalers also recelved a few late berries from North Carolina growers. Farly morning prices of the berries ranged from $2.50 to $4, few not so good selling as lew as $2 for 32-quart crates. It is expected receipts of the barries will continue heavy throughout the week. Other attractive fruits included big shipments of California _cantaloupes, honeyballs and cherries, the fruits be- ing of particularly fine quality. Deal- ers had a few watermelons to offer the retail trade, and large quantities of pineapples. Haulers Farmers' Market had im- mense quantities of Spring greens to offer the retail trade, and many of them had truck loads of flowers for the Deco- ration day trade. Not much care was exercised in the handling of the flowers and the demand for them was light. Center Market will be closed tomor- row. October contracts rallied from 20.66 to 2083, with the general list working about 5 to 13 points net higher, but the advance was checked by pre-hoii- | day realizing and”the market showed reactions of a few points. A private report placed the indicated increase in acreage at 7 per cent and the condition of the crop as of May 18 at 70 per cent, compared with 72.4 at the same time last year. Liverpool cables reported local and continental liquidation in the market there, with rallies from early low prices, promoted by covering on reports of rains in the Atlantic States. The market eased back nearly to yes- terday’s closing quotations during the forenoon under a renewal of pre-holi- day realizing. The volume. of business tapered off but the decline brought some covering. At midday the market was quiet and steady, with prices about net unchanged to 5 points higher. GIVES CAR ORDERS.
