The Federal Trade Commission’s in- estigation of the public utility business much more thorough than was an- cipated by members of the Senate. Although the investigation is scarcely | | two months old, the investigators ha gone at the job painstakingly and in an effort to carry out literally the man- | date of the Senate. The request for extra funds which was made some time | ag0 has not yet been acted upon by | Congress, but it now becomes apparent that_irrespective of the appropriation | the Trade Commission intends to carry !on and go to the bottom of the in- | dustry. Much Evidence Collected. Judge Robert Healy, chief counsel for the commission, has been examining | witnesses while Commissioner McCul- ’lm‘h has been presiding. Both have been giving the closest attention to every | detail and a mass of testimony already has been taken. Some of the Senators | like Mr. Walsh of Montana feel that not enough attention is being given by | the press to the hearings and hence from time to time speeches will be made n the Senate calling attention to various points brought out before the Trade Commission. Thus far the commission has covered only one phase, namely, the efforts of the utilities to bring their side of the | case to the attention of newspapers, col- | leges and schools. There is every indication that the in- vestigation will last far beyond the| Autumn electins and that a compre- hensive report will not be available | until the end of this year, though this | depends entirely upon the speed with which the material can be assembled, and there is no purpose evident to get through in a given time. Senate fied time. merely requesting monthly re- | ports. These will be Iurnish uylhe hearings progress. Examines Subject Thoroughly. The utility industry stated originall that it favored a scientific mv;ugmolty: | mission should make it. In the Senate | this was looked upon as meaning a per- functory investigation, but the Trade Commission has pleasantly surprised the oponents of the utilities by gning |into the subject thoroughly and im- partially. CATHOLIC WOMEN PLAN DINNER DANCE TONIGHT Italian Church Workers to Observe Tenth Anniversary of Their Zvganization. The Italian Catholic Women of Wash- | ington will celebrate the tenth anni- versary of their organization with a dinner dance at 8 o'clock tonight at the Blue Triangle Hut. Several Italian priests from Catho- lic University and representatives of local Italian-American and Catholic or- ganizations of the District will be among the guests. A musical program, featur- vocal selections by Miss Angelina Cl&o. lyric soprano, will be presented. Miss Margaret Slattery will be the ac- companist. Founded by Rev. Nicholas de Carlo, April 29, 1918, as a mutual aid soclety and a co-operative organization for pro- motion of parish activities at Holy Rosary Church, the women's group aims to enroll every Italian Catholic woman \n the District as a member. Mrs. Mary C. Croccia, president, has held that of- fice since the organization was formed, while the other officers include Mrs, Mary Fratantuono, vice president; Mrs, Salvatore Scalia, secretary; Mrs. Teresa Marascio, assistant secretary: Mrs. Tho- pista Cerceo, treasurer, and Mrs. Salva- tore La Scola, assistant treasurer. By the Assoclated Press ATHENS, April 30.—Continued earth- quake shocks were felt on the Isthmus of Corinth today and soon the injured were being brought into Corinth, where relief operations have been established. One shock at noon destroyed a hun- dred houses at Kiato, 13 miles from Corinth on the Patras Railway, and several at Nemea. The shock was also felt at Athens. Two persons were Injured at Phaleron, Further damage was done at the water- ing resort of Loutraki. The station at Xylokastron collapsed, Excavations Continued. More damage was suffered by old Corinth, where Americans are excavat- ing the site of the ancient city, but the excavations were continued. ‘The French vessel Strasbourg arrived at Corinth with tents. near Thebes. Shocks in Bulgaria were accompanied in some instances by the sudden ap- pearance of miniature craters and small lakes. These with the relentless and continuous shaking of the earth, ac- companied by terrifying subterranean roars kept a distraught, shelterless and half naked population in a state bor- dering on madness. Accompanied by Hailstorm. ‘The quake was accompanied by a vio- lent hailstorm at Porisovgrand, which was already laid waste by previous up- heavals. The storm destroyed all re- maining vestiges of vegetation and killed many cattle. Austrian scientists sald the quakes were of tectonic character, involving the shifting of giant strata from vertical to horizontal. They thought that the tremors might extend to other parts of the Balkans which have been devastated by similar disturbances from prehis- toric times. Poison Gas as Rat Killer. Rats, the pest of many parts of Eu- rope, are to be fought with poison gas. A Dane has invented a projector which fires cartridges into the haunts in- fested by the rts. A thick smoke which is given off is harmless to human beings, but is fatal to all rodents witnin range.
