- ‘HOSPITAL BOARD NANES OFFICERS Decrease in Maternity andi Infant Death Rate Re- ported at Columbia. A decrease in the maternity and in- fant death rate at Columbia Hospital for Women was reported yesterday when the work of the institution for the past | year was reviewed at the annual meet- | ing of the women's board. Officers were | clected by the board, with the presi- dency going to Mrs. Reeve Lewis. The board also was confronted with figures showing the mounting expense of the charity work carried on at the | hospital. and in this connection atten- | tion was called to the annual dali to be held tomorrow night at the Willard Hotel to aid this cause. Reporting on the activities of the hos- pital, Dr. Warren P. Morrill, superin- tendent. said that 900 surgical patients were carcd for in the past year, 1551 | obstetrical cases admitted and that the | maternity death rate declined from .65 per cent to .26 per cent and the infant | rate from 288 per cent to 2.59 per cent, as compared to the previous year. ¢ striking was the de d maternity death ra from 1.37 per cent to .41 per cent, due | In a large extent to the out-patient de- | partment. which was reorganized a year ago.” said a statement given out | on behalf of the board. which added “But the operating cost exceed ict 1 doing far more charity resources justify. Of the 31821 treatment ~ given patients last 13230 were given chafty patien: cost of $5.39 per patient per day income of $2.17 per patient per day Charity pasents cost the hospital | $79,941.15, while it received $14.983 from the District of Columbia and from charity rate patients $16.069. leaving a deficft on this group of $48,889." £7,361 Is Raised. H During 1927 the women's board | raised $7.361 toward the budget, supply- | ing the hospital linen, contributions to | the support of the pre-natal clinic and follow-up work, according to the report of the secretary, Mrs. John Gulick. Upon the proceeds of this ball depends largely the extent to which ths work can be carried on during the coming | year, it was explained. | ;" Founded in the early days after the | Civil War, the Columbia Hospital is the | only one in Washington expressly for .
