Special Dispatch to The Star. NEW YORK Apnl 11.—The 6 per cent renewal rate for call money today, un- | familiar during a period of broad and rising markets for investments for the past year and a half, did not disturb those domestic issues that move with stocks or the high coupon foreign obli- gations. It did. however, have a ten- dency to restrict operations in bonds of low vield where competition with day- Joans is an important factor. range of such bonds leads able amount of discussion as to whether they have mnot reached their peak. An inqu'ty into this situa- tion reveals the fact that quite a num- ber of institutional bu have with- | drawn from the market the past two | weeks on the theory that prices are high | snd that firm money rates will bring | down the price level to a point where they will be willing to resume their | purchases. Another snow and rain, repetition of yesterday's weather, made trading in the Center Market wholesale district slow this morning. Business was not especially draggy, | however, according to reports, and it is | expected that improved weather condi- tions will mean improvement in trading. Local dealers this morning had straw- berries from Louisiana growers, 24-quart crates of Klondikes selling at $4.50 and $5, and some Florida berries are still being received. Moderate supplies of oranges and light supplies of grapefruit were re= ported this morning and dealers report- ed fairly large quantities of pineapples having been received the past few days. There were light supplies of Florida tomatoes. Originals were quoted at from $3 to $6.50, while fancy count, re- | packed in Baltimore, sold as high as $7.50. Prices of most commodities to- day were about the same as prices quoted yesterday. Today’s Wholesale Prices. D. C, WEDNESDAY, APRIL 11, EVERYMAN’S INVESTMENTS BY GEORGE T. HUGHES. Rallroad Organizations. The present favorable outlook for the Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul & Pacific Rallroad, successor to the‘old Chicago, Milwaukee & St. Paul, illustrates the benefits so often experienced by & thoroughgoing reorganization. The St. Paul, as it is known in Wall Street or the Milwaukee as it is termed in railroad circles, went into the hands | of a receiver on March 18, 1925. The Interstate Commerce Commission ap- proved the reorganization plan January 10, 1928, and by order of the court the old road passed out of existence March 21 last. The troubles of the St. Paul have been generally ascibed to the Pacific Coast extension, an enterprise which the re- sult proved traffic conditions did not warrant. Competition of the Panama Canal and depressed agriculture and business conditions in the Northwest accentuated by the war were factors. Whatever the exact reasons may have been, during the receivership funds which ordinarily would have gone to pay interest were used to build up the property, putting it in its present physi- cal condition and paving the way for largely increased net earnings once the rehabilitation process has been com- pleted. ‘This Is the story of many other Amer- ican railway reorganizations. It seems incredible now when the Atchison is regarded as the premier railroad prop- erty and its common stock ranks in the | sistant Secretary of the Federal Depart- 1928. PACKERS’ MEETING. One of the developments is the issuance of a fair volume of 6 per cent public utility preferred stocks to meet & demand that has not been satisfled by bond yields. Several such issues were offered today. The activity in Italian bonds con- tinued today., with the government 7s at par. These bonds are not redeem- able until 1941 except for the sinking fund, which has been buying them irom time to time while they have been at a discount. City of Rome 6!s sold again around 96. These bonds are re- deemable after April 1, 1937, at par and may be purchased for the sinking fund at or below par. The same is true of the City of Milan 6ss. The Italian fmun is benefiting from the prospect of jower discounts in Italy which will be followed by further dollar issues. German, Brazilian, Peruvian, Greek and Prench loans were easier. Chilean obligations, however, were strong and near the top. The Australian 5s dupli- cated their previous high of the year. Traction Bonds Stronger. The strongest feature on the domestic | market was to be found in the numer- | ous New York traction bonds in which there was a revival of speculation. This carried them up an average of nearly a point to the best figures in most cases on this movement. Chicago Railway 5s had a t gain. There was a heavy turnover Anaconda Copper convert- ible 7s between 128 and 130, and with numerous “seller 7" transactions, two points under regular sales. Andes Cop- per 7s, United States Rubber 5s, Hud- son Coal 5s, and Dodge 6s were all vy. In the rail list there was a’decline of & point each in Seaboard Air Line 6s, and Florida East Coast 5s. The comment of the examiner for the Inter- state Commerce Commission on the sea- board situation was not helpful to the market for these bonds. Other rails were quiet and fractionally lower.
