Thomas Rochester Shepard, 75 years old, lawyer and author, died in the Home for Incurables yesterday, follow- ing a stroke of apoplexy several days ago. The body will be taken to his birth- place, Dansville, N. Y., where funeral services will be held tomorrow. Inter- ment will be in Dansville. Mr. Shepard was the son of the late Charles and Katherine Rochester Col- man_Shepard. His mother was the granddaughter of the founder of Roch- ester, N. Y He attended Yale University with the class of 1874 and engaged in civil engi- neering. Later taking up law he en- gaged dn practice in Milwaukee and while there collaborated with his broth- ler, Charles E. Shepard, ln ‘writing “Shepard's Wisconsin Digest,” a stand- ard legal document. He later became widely known as a lawyer in Seattle, and in Alaska. He came to this city in 1917 as an at- torney in the Interior Department, re- taining that position until 1924, when he retired. Mr. Shepard is survived by his widow, Mrs. Agnes Bowen Shepard; their son, Charles Shepard, 2d, of Rochester, and a son by a former marriage, Arthur MacCartney Shepard of this city; his brother, Charles E. CRAWFORD DIES AT HOME IN THIS CITY Succumbs at Age of 73 Following Retirement From Pension Office. Funeral Tomorrow. John J. Crawford, 73 years old, for more than 40 years an employe of the Penslon Office, died at his residence, 14 R street northeast, yesterday after a brief iliness. Mr. Crawford was a lifelong resident of Washington. He was appointed to the Census Bureau July 30, 1880. Four years later he was transferred to the Pension Office, where he advanced thmufh the varlous grades to principal examiner, and was retired January 18, 1924. At the time of his death he was employed as vault custodian at the American Security & Trust Co. Mr. Crawford was active in fraternal circles, being a member of the B. B. French Masonic Lodge, F. A. A. M.; Columbia Commandery, No. 2, Knights Templar, and Almas Temple of the Mystic Shrine. He is survived by his widow, Mrs, Minera R. Crawford, and a daughter, Mrs, Bert L. Landes of this city. Funeral services will be conducted from the chapel of John R. Wright Co., 1337 Tenth strect, tomorrow after- noon at 2 o'clock. Burial will be in Glenwood Cemetery.
