BY WILLIAM F. HEFFERNAN. Special Dispatch to The Star. NEW YORK, February 2.—The move- ment of prices was irregular today on Curb Exchange. Bidding up of indus- trial specialties so characteristic of the market of the past month continued to result in new high records in issues selected for leadership, but failed to As a group, public utilities were out- standing because of their strength. American Light and Traction gained 10 points before the demand subsided. American Gas and Electric was a point higher at 125, and Middle West util- itles, United Gas and Improvement and any number of lower priced issues shared in the upturn. Electric Bond and Share at a new high was discounting expected benefits which it is to derive through the con- solidation of Lehigh Power Securities and National Power and Light. If seri- ous developments were exrecled from the proposed congressional investigation into public utility affairs, this belief ket for these stocks. The market for Gobel common was stll responding to prospects of in- creased earnings growing out of the plans for expansion. Around 83 the stock was at & new high. General Bak- ing class “A” was carried up a point or so and Johns-Manville up almost 3 rolnr& At 150 Melville common estab- ished a new high and was 4 points higher. Its. action plainly indicated that the floating supply had been mate- ;Lllly reduced as a result of the recent uying. Others that reached their best prices Included Lake Superior Corporation, Yukon, Alaska trust certificates, Na- tional Transit and National Electric Power “A. The action of the ofls was noteworthy in view of weakness of this group on the Stock Exchange. It was, how- ever, only the high-grade standard divi- dend payers with cash surpluses back of them that did anything on the side of advance. Vacuum Oil was bid up some 3 points.
