Mergenthaler Linotype furnished a surprise on the Washington Stock Exchange today, when it opened at 110% and advanced to 1111 during he session. i Washington Railway & Electric common appeared on the board today after being in the background for Some time, selling at 465. The pre- ferred stock sold at 10115. Peoples Drug_came out today at 1213. Capital Traction sold at 1093 and there was considerable trading in other local issues. Bonds were firm on a moderate turnover. Many New Directors Elected. Reports elsewhere in today’s Star of the annual meetings of many Wash- ington banks show that the stockhold- ers have added many new directors to their lists. Riggs National and the Continental Trust added the most new names, but several other institutions put on cne or two more directors. At the Park Savings Bank meeting today Warren W. Spencer was added to the directorate and it intimated that®at the organization meeting late this afternoon two additional vice presidents would be elected. Clay Products Declares Dividend. The Continental Clay. l"nnlnflt Cor- poration, headed by E. Chewning of Washington as )WrPsiriem flm! with offics Washington, has declared a semi-an- ferred stock of $1,000,000 to stockhold- ers as of record December 15, 1927, payable January 5, 1 Chaine of department stores, com- parable in size to General Motors Cor- poration and United States Steel Cor- poration, will be a development of the near future, according to Edward A. Filene, prominent merchant, who read a paper on “The Present Status and Future Prospects of Chains of De- partment Stores” before the Ameri- can Economic Association, here re- cently. Such a chain will operate 50 to 100 large department stores in cities from coast to coast and do a_business of a billion dollars a yvear. Each depart- ment of each store, Mr. Filene says, will itself be a unit in a chain of similar departments. In this way the advantages' of chain stores will be combined with the advantages of department stores. New Industrial Facts Sought. Tndér the direction of the Organiza- tion Service of the Chamber of Com- merce of the United States an effort} will be made to chart the shifting of industry during the past year. Mem- ber organizations scattered throughout the country have been asked to report manufacturing plants started during the year and whether the plant is a new undertaking, a branch plant or a removal from another place. When the returns are complete figures will be compiled for the entire country. ‘The survey is expected to reveal how extensive a basis of fact exists for the reiterated statement that in- dustry js shifting its ground and that in some instances highly concentrated industries are spreading out to get into closer touch with their markets, AbItibi Pow (5).
