HEFFERNAN. | Special Dispateh to The Star. | NEW YORK, December 21.—The main body of stocks continued to ex- | hibit a buoyant undertone on the Curb Hxchange today, and proceedings | were enlivened by switching opera- tions which brought new leaders to the fore. One of the broadest lists of the year was covered in the deal: ings, and total transactions approach: ed peak levels. Spectacular movers of the past few , such as Nrextonc Tire, North- ern Btates Power “A” and Sheaffer Pen, the latter issue being influenced by the announcement of a split-up in stock on the basis of 20 for 1 share, did mot entirely move out of the pic- ture, but fluctuations in them were less broad, However, Quaker Oats managed to register a new high for all time around 290. New stocks brought forth included Mountain Producers, which ruled ex- ceptionally active along with Salt ek Producers, both at peuk levels for the movement. Lone Star Gas sold up to 65, while Gulf Oil, not to be outdone, sold at the record high of 115. Brockway Motors spurted more than 2 points to 52, and on a large turnover Industrial Rayon “A" fluctuated between 21 and 22 Newmont Mining reached a new high record for all time with sales around 131 for a net gain of about 6 points. Yesterday's announcement of the stock dividend accounted for the buying. New Jersey Zinc exhibited strength around 188 and while public utilities inclined toward irregularity at times, many issues scored sizeable advances. Blectric Bond & Share -continued in the limelight, with United Gas & Im- provement doing well. There was a sharp drop in Pennsylvania Power & Light 7 per cent preferred. Mostly fractiopal changes were noted in the Standard Oil group, but severzl of the low-priced independents moved in lively manner. Carib Syn- dicate and Continental Petroleum, which stock will shortly be listed on the London Stock Exchange, were cases in poln( WHEAT HAS SETBAGK ON LIVERPOOL NEWS Free Offerings of Argentine Ship- pers Abroad Have Bearish Effect at Chicago. By the Associated Press. CHICAGO, Déecember 21.—Unexpect- ed lower quotations at Liverpool led to an early decline today,in the wheat market here. Argentine shippers were reported to be offering wheat freely abroad and there was lack of agares- sive support here from buyers. Open. ng unchanged to % off, Chicago wheat prices afterward showed a material setback all around. Corn, oats and provisions displayed weakness, 100, corn starting unchanged to % down an subsequently undergoing a general rop. Among the circumstances which tended to restrict wheat buying today was the fact that another orop re- port from Washington was due after the close. The report was scheduled to tell of the acreage and condition of Fall.sown wheat and rye. In view of a possible surprise exhibit would-be purchasers evinced a disposition to go slow until after t| new official fig- ures were out, especially as the Liver- pool market today was lower than ex- pected and Argentine advices were bearish. Selling based to some extent on an- nouncement that corn receipts in Chi- cago today, 265 oars, were larger than A week ago and about the same as last year had a bearish influénce at times today on the corn market. Be- sides Kansas City corn arrivals today, 270 cars, were far in excess of the cor- responding total last year. On the other hand, export bids for corn today at the Gulf of Mexico were again higher. sl SILVER QUOTATIONS. NEW YORK, December 21 (#).— Bar silver, 571 ; Mexican dollars, 43%. [RER FOREIGN EXCHANGE.
