Sometimes when you get started on a spending splurge it requires some good hard blows with the adze of common sense before you can hammer your financial program back into shape. Money Question Paramount. Altogether the market this week has again moved against the facts of business, which are not satisfactory, but in harmony with the investment situation, whose foundations are strong and continue to be supported by easy money. It is important, there- fore, to consider whether money is to remain abundant and cheap in the fu- ture. This question is intimately related to the present large flow of gold out of the country. In the past week Holland and Sweden have joined the list of nations buying our gold, and most important of all, an additioral 7,600,000 has been sent to London. We are on the eve of the adeption of policies that may determine the discount rates of the Iederal Reserve Banks as well as of the Bank of England and the Bank of Germany fo~ the next six months. | Associat:d with this is the proposed stabilization of the currencies of Italy ind France in the early part of 1928 Bankers' Meeting Recalled. It will be remembered that early in July the heads of all of the large e 1 central banks of Europe met here st e 4 | with the governor of the Federal Re- serve Bank cf New York. A month later the IPederal reserve rediscount rate was reduced from 4 per cent to 315 per cent. Subsequently the Bank of Germany discount advanced to 7 per cent. -The Bank of England had unwisely reduced its rediscount rate to 41, per cent, and was only uble to keep it *here during the Summer Le- cause of the lower rate here. Following these events sterling ex- charge began to rise when, according to seasonal! precedence, it should have declined. The currencies of Holland, Germany and scandinavia foilowed. Argentine and Brazil negotiated large loans in New York and drew gold out of this market in payment.
