COAL CONFERENGE MEETS TOMORROW Davis Will Make Conciliatory Attempt, Despite Absence of Some Operators. The conference of operators and mine union officials called by Secre- tary of Labor Davis to meet here to discuss the coal suspension in the Northern fields 1 be held tomor- row despite refusal of many leading operators to attend. Returning to his office today after a week end absence, the Labor Sec- retary, who proposed the conference at the suggestion of the union lead- ers, went over the replies to his call and announced that the meeting would not be abandoned. ‘While principal operators of Ohio, Pennsylvania and northern West Vir- ginia declined to accept invitations to the conference, all of the union offi- cials addressed were said to have ac- cepted, along with some individual coal operators in the territory affected by the suspension. Secretary Davis undertook to pre- pare a statement of the reasons which had led to the call and which will be read to the meeting. The Govern ment's position, it was understood, will be clearly outlined. Prior to its presentation he refused to amplify his statement in calling the conference, and refused likewise to comment upon the refusal of the more important mine operators to participate.
