AL ESTATE.' THE D. C, SATURDAY, DECEMBER 10, 1927.' Conducted for The Slar BY ELIZABETH STETSON AND GENEVIEVE HENDRICKS (XXXXIIXXXXTAE XX Sun Porch of Adams Inspiration BY ELIZABETH STETSON. This sun porch is not really a sun porch at all, but a decorative vista which can be seen from the hall through a large arch. It is about 10 feet deep by 20 feet wide. The bal- anced treatment, the rectangular lines and delicate paneling, with the arched window dominating the two groups of furniture, are suggestive of the Adam period. The Adam style is the direct resi of the second ciassic revival. The covery of Pompeii and Herculan (around 1770). the old Roman which were buried i tion of Vesuvius, terest of the entire world in Roman acchitecture and art. Robert Adam, son of one of the well known archi- tects of England, went abroad to see and study these great discoveries. His books and the subsequent stvle of architecture developed by him and his brother James became the rage in England. Every one turned classical and many of the great country estates of earlier style were remodeled by the Brothers Adams. Correct Scale Exemplified. The interior architecture of this period has a feeling of correct scale and restraint and cannot be handled with the informality suitable to many other periods. It is marked princi- pally by rectangular lines and fine proportions, relieved by graceful arches. Long straight paneling. made by attaching moldings to the surface of the plaster wall, gives a sense of extreme height and delicacy to the room. The finish of the plaster should be fine: rouzh plaster would be en- tirely out of keeping. Selling real estate from the clouds will become a fact for the first time next December 12 when William Lind- ley, ploneer air mail fiyer, and George Haldeman, who recently was picked out of the Atlantic Ocean with his aviatrix companion, Miss Ruth Elder, take the air as salesmen. The two fiyers have contracted with the Havana Biltmore Realty Co. to sell real estate in Cuba this Winter. They will begin on Monday, December 12. They will leave New York within a week, stopping off twice to partici- pate in fetes intended for the return- ing Atlantic airman. Mills Report Decreased Orders. Reports from 84 identical Southern pine mills show orders received de- creased 3.33 per cent from the previous week; shipments decreased 0.47 per cent and production increased 1.78 per cent. These 84 mills show 44,165,028 feet ordered, 48,153,862 feet shipped and 48,980.834 feet produced, with orders on hand at end of last amek amounting to 137,326,919 feet. Construction Manual Planned. The national committee on wood utilization of the Department of Com- merce announces as in preparation an elaborate construction manual de- signed to show the best use of lumber and wood products in construction of all kinds, including an assembly of the best available information from all sources. This will be for the particu- Jar assistance of architects, engineers, contractors and builders. Desirable APARTMENTS Le Bourget 2127 California St. N.W. Davis Co. 733 12th St Main 352-35 of period, but furnished and decorated so atrociously that we are endeavoring to describe here the most suitable furniture and its best ar- rangement against the architectural detail and background of this style. The delicate ght paneling requires furniture of graceful and straight lines. Hepplewaite, Shera- ton, Louis XVI, Adam, Directoire and even early Empire are correct, but there must be symmetry in arrangement. Tall Pieces Barred. The scale in the furnishing of this and stra " [type of room should be kept light. No tall pieces should be used. The - | chair rail is low and the majority of the furniture should be about that height. As one can easily see, the use of this low furniture around the room makes a decided contrast to the tall windows, and super-mantel construc- tion. The feeling of delicacy and exquisite restraint thus ~created is one’s first impression of the Adam period. Also the contrast of the mahogany which was used for most of the Hepplewaite and Sheraton furniture with the light walls adds to the gen- eral sense of fine scale The walls may bo painted white. gray, green, blue or mauve, but all of these colors must be used in pastel shades. The “Adam green” is still one of our most popular wall shades. These colors also are appropriate for the draperies, which may be of light silk, plain or striped, taffeta, satin_or ddmasks, but always light and delicate in pattern. Net curtains should be of fine plain net or of one with graceful figures of Adam inspiration. The rugs for this room should always be plain. announce Mr. Mr. Louis I For sold to di inating ple Beautiful architecture Finest- modern construction 20-inch stone walls Modern textone wall finish Latest noiseless oil burners Modern kitchen equipment 7 and 8 large rooms 1 and 2 tiled baths 1 and 2 master bedrooms houses with the architectural features | N.
