Larner of the Washington Loan & Trust Co. an- nounces that the new $1,000,000 10-story addition to the institution, at Ninth and F streets northwest, will be open for public inspection from 5 to 9 o'clock this evening, tomorrow and Wednesday evenings. This in- formal opening will give other bankers in the city an opportunity to see the extention which contains 56 additional rooms and is larger than the original | bank. One of the most interesting features of the new building is the vault in the basement. An innovation in this is a second door, which is just a bit larger than a porthole on an ocean liner, opens only from the inside, and sup- plies an avenue of escape to any one accidentally locked in by the closing of the main door, which weighs about 30 tons. SAUL CO. 925 15tk St. N.W. SUBSTITUTE FOR SAFETY HE ENORMOUS GROWTH of American cities, during the years from 1890 to the be- ginning of the World War, was due to many factors, varying somewhat according to place. But almost everywhere these forces operated through a simple instrument—Traction. It was the extension of street railways and the evolution of the horse car into steam car, the steam car into cable car, the cable car into electric car, that constantly stretched the city frontiers and brought factories where there were once forests and workmen’s dwellings where there was once waste. In every city bankers provided the motivating force for the evolution of Traction. The house of Hamble- ton was founded in 1865, not a half-dozen years since the primitive beginning of Traction in Balti- more. Thirty years later it was leading the way toward Traction as we know it today and T. Edward Hambleton was earning for himself the title, “Father of Rapid Transit.” HAMBLETON é&° CO.
