FIN —_— GERMAN BONDS SAG| IN TRADING TODAY Tone Good in Speculative Rails and Junior Public Utilities Issues. EY CHARLES F. SPEARE. NEW YORK, November 19 —Weak- ness in German government 7 per cent bonds and in some of the other Ger- man issues developed today with the 7s around 105, and the Central Bank issues quite soft. The early dissolu- tion of the Prussian 6 per cent loan syndicate with a subsequent decline of 412 points in these bonds and the pointed remarks made by the pr dent of the Reichs Bank on municipa loans caused further liquidation in this group. ‘The domestic bond list held to the Ssame strong tendency it has shewn through the week, during which the average of the market has advanced over 15 point. Industrial issues were quite strong, with Dodze 6s leading at a level points above the low of the year with further advances in the Cuba Cane Sugar and Iron and Steel bonds There was also a firm tone to semi speculative rails and to junior public utilities The offering today of Ohio Power Co. first and refunding mortgage bonds is futeresting. not only because of the 413 per cent coupon, but from the fact that a portion of the issue is to_be used to retired 7 per cent honds _ It is estimated that new financing | in prospect aggregates about $200.000,- 000, of which over one-third will he represented in the 5 per cent bonds of the Youngstown Sheet & Tube Co. NEW YORK, November 19 (#).— Bituminous coal markets of the coun- try are in a state of flux, with definite indications of major trends lacking, Coal Age News reports. Production is still in excess of current demand. Publication of the Government stock report last week showing reserves in the hands of consumers far above the level at which a seller’s market begins has killed any hope of a sharp upturn in the near future. o BOSTON STOCK MARKET. BY WILLIAM F. HEFFERNAN, Special Dispateh to The Star. | NEW YORK, November 19.—The movement continued in the as the week drew to a close However, it was again a spe- cialty market, with sharp upturns in individual issues rather than gains n the main mody of stocks. As a group, the oil shares gave the most noteworthy performance. Large blocks of Humble Oil and Vacuum changed hands at record high prices. There appeared to be plenty of basis for the expectation in the latter case of a substantial stock distribution and the general belief prevailed that when this is acted on it take the form of a 100 per cent disbursement with the new shares carrying a $3 annual dividend. It was the same incentive that was responsible for the urgent demand for Humble. Ohio Oil, after aving sold recently ex the quarterly was selling at its high, above . and Standard of Tndiana was with- in'a fraction of itg best for the pres- ent shares. Lone Star Gas, considered more of a utility issue than an oil stock, be- cause of its husiness, fea- tured the utilities, established a new high well above 56. No let up in the demand occurred for Southeastern Power, which reached its high for ths vear around Ameri Gas and Electric featured the high-priced is- sues, closely followed by Middle West Jt oS Becauae of its valuable holdings of other issues acquired at prices con- siderably helow current market quo- tations, Nev fining reached a new high above 115. The words of warning issued sometime ago hy of-| ficials of Bancitaly Co. regarding the spectacular rise which the shares have enjoyed failed to check the upward movement which carried that stock to its best today. Johns Manville, with the support of powerful banking in- terests, was carried up another point or so. Among the motors, Auburn Motor was heavily bought at a rise of almost 4 points. COTTON 1§ STEADY: RANGE IS NARROW Offerings Light and Early Decline Is Wiped Out by Spot House Buying. By the Associated Press. NEW YORK, November 19.— The cotton market opened steady to- day at a decline of 3 to 6 points in re- sponse to relatively easy Liverpool cables, but offerings were compara- tively light and prices soon steadied on week-end covering coupled with a little trade buying. Liquidation of December contracts continued, but spot houses were again buyers of near months. without much change in the differences as compared with later deliveries. January sold up from 19.42 to 1 and May from 19.79 to 19.89 before the end of the first hour, or about 5 to 6 points net higher. The amount of cotton on shipboard awaiting clearance at the end of the week was estimated at 122,000 bales against 192,000 at the same time last year. Private cables attributed the decline in Liverpool to hedge selling and liqui- dation promoted by weakness in the market for Egyptian cotton and ex- pected bearish ginning returns. K. C. .
