VICTORY CLAIMED " BY MINE STRIKERS {Colorado I. W. W. Pickets In- i* vade Camps, Despite Guards. By the Associated Press. DENVER, Colo., October 21.—The #fth day of the Colorado coal strike icalled by Industrial Workers of the iWorld found the strikers claiming wictory in the first test of strength awith the State. Confronted by hundreds of pickets, puthorities in southern Colorado ves- ‘terday were unable to muster enough special officers to prevent invasion of mining camps by strikers. As a re- sult, more mines suspended and op- erators turned to the State to rein- force special police. The Colorado Fuel & Iron Co., one of the largest mining concerns in the State, announced it would ask for State police unless county authorities ‘were able to stop picketing. William H. Young of the State Industrial Com- mission. admitted the commission Jacked power to obtain further action and said he believed the State police should take control. Women Aid in Picketing. Several woman pickets appeared in the Walsenburg area to assist the men in defying the State order to ar- rest all strikers appearing on mine property. Six strikers were arrested on charges of picketing in violation of the State labor statute. This brought the total arrests to 26. Although I. W. W. leaders warned authorities that their men would start “to pack six-guns” as soon as there was bloodshed among strikers, all pickets were searched before being as- I. W. W. spokesmen ps reiterated state- ments that the strike would be peace- ful as long as pickets were not at- tacked. Operators Allege Intimidation. Operators declared that more than 90 per cent of the 4,000-0dd strikers desired to work, but had been intim- idated. ‘While the I. W. W. activities cen- tered in the Walsenburg or southern State district, mines in the Boulder | (northern) area remained at a stand- ill. still.
