FINANCIAL SPECULATIVE LIST OF BONDS WEAKER Higher Money Rate Factor. Rest of Securities Steady, but Market Is Dull. BY CHARLES F. SPEARE. sSpecial Dispatch to The Star. NEW" YORK, September 19. — The firmer rate for money today and weak- ness in stocks had their effect on spec- ulative bonds. The total output of tax ex- empts so far this vear is well over $1,000,000,000. So far as underwriting syndicates are concerned there are not many large blocks in their hands, but dealers are fairly well supplied with them and are hoping for a better re- tail market. In the foreign department conditions Wwere quieter than they have been in several weeks with an absence of the marking up policy of various groups. Prices were irregular with some re- action in South Americans and slight gains in continental issues. Railroad and public utility bonds moved within a narrow price ran A number of the legal utilities are now at the highest of the vear and have gone to figures which prohibit some of ¢ the large insurance companies from making additional purchases. United States Government bonds were dull’ and generally unchanged. WHEAT AND CORN RISE IN CHICAGO DEALINGS Cold Weather in Belt Brings Boost to Coarse Grain Prices—Liver- pool Factor in Market. By the Associated Press. CHICAGO, September 19.—Cold weather suddenly overspreading the corn belt brought about an early rush to buy in the corn market today and gave prices a big lift. Wheat was also stronger, owing largely to un- expected firmness of Liverpool quo- tations and to Southern Hemisphere complaints of “drought. Opening at 1% to 3% advance, corn held much of the gain, Wheat started unchang- ed to % up and continued to average higher. - Oats were firmer. Provisions likewise tended upward. In addition to a severe drop in tem- peratures throughout the corn belt, reports that the long succession of hot days of late had been too much for a considerable part of the crop, acted as an incentive to buy today. ~According to some advices, firing of the crop has taken place’in spots’'and now a return to unseasonable coolness has » laterrupted the maturing of the larger part the crop which was being favorably affected by heat. Unlooked-for relative strength of the Liverpool wheat market today, promoting advances here, was attrib- uted in part to renewed assertion" that the Canadian estimates of yield have ‘been excessive. Dry weather rdvices from Australia and Argentina were algo the subject of much notice. Meanwhile, receipts today at Minne- epolis and Duluth were far in excess of the total a year ago. Special Dispateh to The Star, NEW YORK, September 19.—An abrupt reversal of the general price trend developed on the Curb Ex- change at the outset of the weck. Moving sympathetically with. pro- nounced weakness on .the stock ex- changes, prices gave way. readily when the desire to take down speg- ulative profits became widespread.. It was a matter of speculation whether this was the result of a technical reaction long overdue or a sudden realization that the prolonged upward movement had carried past to a level where actual conditions within the market itself and on the outside had been overdiscounted. Nevertheless, once the downward trend got under way it became par- ticularly sharp. Recent Favorites Suffer Most. Recent favorites of the type of Johns Manville, Gillette Safety Razor, Celanez Corporation and Tubize Artl- ficial Silk were the ones to suffer most. The last named at 280 com- pared with last week’s final of 289. but the subsequent recovery carried it back over most of the ground lost. However, this was not the case with the other issues named. Bancitaly, which had been among the most prominent in the advance, changed hands at around 111 8 against Saturday's close of 120%. But considering the extent of the rise previous to the recent stock divi- dend distribution, it was generally conceded that the selling represented almost in its entirety the taking down of speculative profits, Palm- olive also broke violently, reaching 94 for a loss.of more than 13 points before offerings were completed. This was one Instance of the excesses committed on the hu)illng side in the recent campaign for high prices. Public Utilities Not Spared. Public utilities were not spared in the wave of selling. American Gas & Electric lost over 3 points. Electric Investors was down almost 2 points and United Gas & Improvement al- most a point. The mining stocks were featured by a drop of 3 points in Newmont Mines, which had held the center of the speculative interest on the buy- ing side recently. Because of the fact that the oil shares had done little on the side of advance, their com- parative steadiness in face of pro- ‘nntlmced weakness elsewhere meant ittle.
