REVIEW DF PAROLE ASKED BY DR, COOK Authority of U. S. Court Where He Was Convicted of Mail Fraud Issue. By the Associated Press. r. Frederick A. Cook, Arctic ex- plorer, today petitioned the Supreme Court to_decide whether the Federal District Court for Northern Texas, in which he was convicted for using the mails to defraud, d authority to place him on probation. Sentenced on November 21, 14 years and 9 months at 1 - worth, Dr. Cook asked the District Court recently to place him on pro- bation under a law pro ch clemency, but whic he commenced se The District Court granted his request over the objection of the Government. which contended that the act was un- constitutional and that the court had lost control in the matter because he had commenced serving his sentence. ‘The Circuit Court of Appeals reversed the District Court. ROCKVILLE, Md., September 12.— JFederal and State authorities are in- wvestigating the shipment of two fgrunks, containing alleged whisky, from Florida to “Miss Nord Mcin- tyre and Miss Beeman,” obtained from the railroad station at Forest Glen, Md., by & man giving his name when arrested as Frank P. Davis. Davis, whose automobile was stopped as he drove away from the station, ‘wwas released on $500 bail for appear- ance when wanted. The consignees named on the trunk labels and sup- posed to be students of a Forest Glen seminary, are fictitious persons, ac- cording to the authorities. Davis re- fused to permit the officers to see the contents of the trunk when they or- dered him to stop his car, but a search warrant was obtained, and after opening the trunks the officers locked up Davis and took the alleged liquor to Washington. William Doss of Gaithersburg signed Davis' bond. The Forest Glen station master said Davis was accompanied by a woman, but that she took no part in the transaction. the man merely calling for the trunks with bills of lading in his hand, and being permitted to take them upon signing in the regular way. It is understood the authorities were tipped off by enforcement officers in Florida to watch for Davis, whose home is believed to be in that State. ALEXANDRIA.
