Critcher School of Painting and AppliedmA‘_rts Portrait and KYOTO 15 GO0 IN APANESE LIFE City Has Long Been Scene of Coronations—New One 1s Planned. Japan's Imperial Coronation Com- mission has just announced that the | Emperor Hirohito will be crowmed in Kyoto in November, 1928. “Kyoto, where the 125th of an un- broken line of Japanese Emporers will be crowned, is ‘the eternal oity of Jupan,” savs a bulletin from the Na- tional Geographic Society. “What Jerusalem signifies to_ the Jewish world and Rome to the Latins, Kyoto means to the Land of the Rising Sun. It is the focus of history, the center of recligion, the geat of learning and the patron city of art. “Mo@ern Kyoto was laid out accord- ing to imperial decree in the year 794 A. D., and was the Emperor's place of reiidence until the royal family moved to Tokio, the present capftal, in 1868, contllues the bulletin. ‘‘Fol- lowing the example set by the Chi- nese Tang Emperors in planning their capital, the Japanese city builders laid out Kyoto in squares, nine long, straight streets running ‘in sither direc- tion, cutting each other at right an- gles. This original plan has been somewhat interfered with by various conflagrations and consequent rebufld- ing. Midway through the city runs the rocky bed of the Kamogawa, or ‘Duck River,' and on three sides rise ragged hills, covered with pine and maple, from whose leafy eobscurity peep historic temples and nviting tea houses. Away on the plain to the south Ties the busy manufacturing district of Osaka. ‘Gosho Belies Nume. “The Gosho, or old imperial palace, belies its mame, Tor it was completely rebuilt after @ fire in 1854. It s @ collection of one-toried buildings, set in gardems of the best Japanese land- scape style, the whole covering 28 acres. Entering by the ‘Gate of the Honorable Kitchen,’ the visitor, afver leaving his shoes, wanders through one hall after aiother, bare of furni- | ture, but decorated in the gol@en lacquer of Japan’s most noted artists. “Pillars and beams of unpainted wood show a grain fine as satin. Floors are covered with waft ‘white matting. Sliding screens, causing the artificial landscaping of the imterven- ing garfien to seem a part of the pal- ace itself, form the walis. The whole palace gives an impression of mellow and severely simple beauty. “‘Nijo Castle has stone walls and & mote and curved eaves, like the Ori- ental palaces of dremms. It used to be the residence of the Shogums when those ministers were more powerful than the Emperors in whose name they ruled. After Admiral Perry's advent in Tokio Bay, the Emperor dismissed his haughty deputy and held the reins himself. The glories of Nijo Castle were aesigl:eflmm nhplrgr to the Jap- anese worl e supe: prestige of the Shoguns over the Emperors. Now it is imperial property. “With the rival courts of Shogun and Emperor as patrons, art early flourished in Kyoto. Workers in bronze and tvory, artists in brocades and crepes, skilled embroiderers and makers of @umascere and cloisonne flocked te the capital. Possibly be- cause of this early start, it is in Kyoto that the finest examples of JYapanese artistry are to be soon, and workers there are saill to be least contaminated by the commercialism of modern Irge- scale production. “Many artists work in their own homes and sell ofily by appointment. A prospective buyer Is introduced, sips tea the proprietor, discusses the weather amd: Joys of his tour, then sees a few objects of art brought from their boxes, and at last emerges tri- umphant with a cloisonne vase or damascene cigarette Case. “The clear waters of the Kamogawa Rl.livermmldmb. without rival in the matter of setting bright<colored silk dyes. . Kimonos of Kyoto Gelsha girls are celebrated for the magnifi- cence of their coloring. On festival days the streets become veritable flower gardens. No Secrets in Homes. “Interminable streets of low, gray- tiled houses are monotonous in archi- tecture, but ever alive with interest to the foreigner. From his Jinrikisha seat the tourist reviews the home Iife of Japan in minute detail, for in fair weather the sliding paper screens of the wall panels are pushed dback, leav- ing shop and dwelling open to the world. At night the effect is one con- tinuous stage. Grandfather ia ki- mono and spectacles reads the paper. mother feeds the baby, little boys nod at their sums, artists toil over paint- ing or embroidery, a fat man sleeps on the floor with his mouth open. In & tea house guests are helng served tea and orange and sponge cake. One party is gay with sake. The reel goes on and on as long as one rides. It is the monotonous every day of a great Japanese city, but fairy dream to the newly arrived tourist. “Kyoto has famous temples, Bud- @hist and Shinto. To Vvisit them all ‘would require weeks, for each has its unique interest. In one is a great bronze bell, struck like a gong from the outside instead of by a clapper from within. The world-famous gar- dens of another contain a century-old pine tree, trained to the shape of a Junk in full sall. The glant beams of a mewer temple were wet in place by ropes braided from the hair of ‘woman believers too poor to contribute coin.
