e PUBLIC UTILITIES wowwede FIN MARKET FEATURE Recovery in U. S. Steel and Motors Strengthens Gen- eral Industrial Group. BY GEORGE T. HUGHES. Special Disnatch to The Star. YORK, August 16.—The re continued on the \|r;nk Ex change as the market opened today. The filrmml ont industrials like United States Steel and General Motors were 1aken at or above where they left oft yesterday, and their strength Sentimental influence upon the indus trial group generally. Public utilities stood out prominent- 1y under leadership of North Ameri- can and Peoples Gas, the former re- sponding to the highly favorable re- port for the 12 months ending June 30. Among the rails the leaders were Union Pacific and Atchison. Western Maryland continued to improve, and at 471; was a half point higher. Pennsylvania was another in_this group that attracted attention at high. er prices. Other Specialties Move Upward. The special operation kept on in TRadio Corporation and Electric Boat Otner specialties that worked higher included General Railway Signal. Westinghouse Electric, International | Harvester and Montgomery Ward. Shares of companies doing business | with the farmer wers among the Jeaders. Sears-Roebuck went to a new high under the present share capitalization when it crossed 71'; At the same time a block of 3,800 shares opened at improved prices on the Chicago Exchange, indicating that much of the demand was for Western account. Montgomery Ward was an- other in this group, as was Interna- tional Harvester, Shorts in Baldwin Locomotive were again hard pressed and the price was carried to the highest in history when it crossed 235, Kxpress stocks stood | out strongly under leadership of | American Express at its best prices. Buying Shows Confidence. The stock market was very strons. In fact, the buying appeared more confident that at any time sice Presi- dent Coolidge announced his inten- tions as to renomination. It differed in one respect from other recent ses- sions of rising prices, and that was in the character of the stocks involved. The pool specialties, the collapse of which was responsible for last week’s violent reaction, were neglected. In- deed it was shares more nearly ap- proaching investment status that were the leaders. In this particular the proceedings were more reassuring. The motive, however, was the same, namely, speculation and not invest- ment. If there was any connection between the news and the market it did not appear on the surface. The strength in the motor stocks would seem to in- dicate prosperity sufficient for all. Call money again renewed at 3% per cent. The market turned more irregular as the afternoon went on, when early purchasers attempted to take profits. Before this had happened, however, a number of specialties had been ta en up and advanced in price. —_— PROBE IS EXTENDED. NEW YORK, August 16 (#).—The {nvestigation into the manipulation of Manhattan Electrical Supply common, which resulted in a 70-point drop in the price of the stock in two days and the suspension of A. L. Fuller & Co. from the New York Stock Exchange, has been extended to Chicago, Deputy Attorney General Keyes Winter, in charge of prevention of fraud, states. Washington -Stock Exchange SALES.
