BRIDGE REPAIRS INPROBABLE NOW Chain Span May Remain Closed Until Congress Au- thorizes Rebuilding. Proposed repairs to the historic Chain Bridge which has been closed to vehlcular traffic on account of the deteriorated condition of its Virginia abutment probably will not be under- | taken, it was indicated today by Dis- As soon as the bridge was closed Engineer Commission Col. William B. Ladue, ordered an investigation to de- termine whether the abutment could be put in safe condition pending re- constrution of the span. A prelimi- nary survey has convinced the bridge engineers that the entire abutment will have to be reconstructed, which would require the building of a coffer- dam, and thereby, entail a large ex- penditure. Will Cost $350,000. Col. Ladue questioned the wisdom | of spending a large amount of public | funds on the old structure, in view of the efforts that will be made at the forthcomin, on "of Congress procure its replaceme e . Walton N Virginia has promised to father Ie lation for a new bridge, although District likely will be required to pe the entire cost. Virginia State offi- cials have notified District authorities that the State constitution forbids it trom sharing in the expense of build- ing a new bridge. It is estimated that the bridge can be replaced for about $350,000, providing the present piers and the District abutment are used. A new abutment will have to be built on the Virginia side, however. $50,000 in Bridge Fund. The District has $50,000 in its bridge repair fund for the current fiscal year, which could be used to strengthen the Virginia abutment, and the work could get under way in the near fu- ture if a decision is reached to make the repairs. District officials are not anxious to use the major portion of the bridge repair allotment for Chain Bridge and forego needed repairs on other bridges in the District. - | AMBASSADOR’S SALARY IS HELD UP BY McCARL Controller Rules Envoy to Turkey Must Await Senate Approval, . In spite of the decision, it was learned at the State Department, ar- rangements are being made for Mr. Grew to sail about August 1 for Con- stantinople, and some means will be devised to meet his expenses. The McCarl decision, in line with previous findings, held that recess appointments by the President, filling vacancles which existed during the session of Congress, cannot be ac- corded Federal pay until the nomi- nations arc confirmed by the Senate.
