14 * FIN - SELEGTED STOKS | AEBDUPWLDLY Short Covering Factor. Nickel Plate Strong. BY GEORGE T. HUGHES. &pecial Dispatch to The Star. NEW YOR! fay 14.—The strensth in the stock market today centered about the same stocks as the preced- ing session. The movement was more extreme and activity was greater, but the character of the trading was un- changed. Selected stocks were bid up in some instances wildly. Short covering played a large part in the advances of certain issues under pres- sure recently, while others were evi- dently accumulating a new short in- terest. One or two fresh weak spots developed. In short, the proceedings were two-sided. The market moved by groups only In a slight degree. The chief interest in the rails was in the shares of the roads associated with the Nickel Plate and the Chesapeake & Ohio. Stand- ard dividend-paying issues were neg- lected, and only casual attention was paid {o the general run of non-divi dend payers. One or two oils shot for- ward sensationally, while the ‘others did nothing at The motors were unusually quiet. Nickel Plate Again Rises. _ New York, Chicago & St. Louis, which had such a spectacular rise Fri- day, extended its gain to a new high, and Chesapeake & Ohio did the same, both at the best for all time. The buy. fng was still representing readjust- ment of traders’ ideas of the values of the stock of the New Chesapeake Cor- poration and the prospects of the Chiesapeake & Ohio itself. Erie first preferred sold only a little under its record high. Earning at an estimated rate of over 20 per cent, it was rea- sonable to expect some dividend ac- tion, it not the guarantee o long talked about. Bangor & Aroostook ran up 3 points in its usual easy fash- all, fon. The wildest trading was that in Raldwin. It opened comparatively steady around the preceding close and then jumped to a new high above 200. Thereafter fluctuations were rapid as ! new buyers collided with profit-takers. American Car & Foundry and Amer- jean Locomotive went up moderately / in sympathy with Baldwin. Pullman was strong also, but that started its move independently on the day before. Industrial Specialties. Tndustrial specialties which respond- ed to efforts ‘I):ctheir behalf included €Coca Cola, International Cement, International Harvester, Corn Prod- wets and Loose Wiles, all at the high- est of the year of the date. Brookly Tnion Gas was the leader of the utilities and Houston Oil of the oils. The other oil stock in favor was Producers and Refiners. ANCIAL., Abitibl Pow (5). Abrahm&Straus. Adams Exp (6). BONDS RRECULA: TRADING RO Changes Negligible—Aver- age Slightly Above That of Last Saturday. - BY CHARLES F. SPEARE. Special Dispatch to The Star. NEW YORK, May 14.—An lrrezu lar and narrow hond market featured the closing of one of the most inter- esting weeks of the year. The changes left prices about where they w yes. terday, but with the average of the entire list slightly above last Satur- day. The disturbance in Berlin had a moderate effect on German issues with stock warrants attached. On the other hand, French bonds were firmer. and there was a better tone to Italian issues. In this week's new offerings. amounting to $230,000,000, not a sin; foreign bond appeared. The classifica- tion was as follows: Railroad bonds, $100,000,000; State and municipal, $65,000,000; industrial, $50.000,000; public utility, $15,000,000 There was a slightly easier trend to the United States Government mar ket. An analysis of the Federal re. serve statement indicates that the liquidation by the Federal reserve banks this week was almpst entirel: in certificates of indebtedness which were reduced from $155.724,000 to $92 313,000. The banks now hold approx imately $254,000,000 United Statey Government securities compared wit| '$396,000,000 a year ago. Railroad bonds were firmer, ularly the Chesapeake corporation and some of the new low coupon is sues like Burlington 4%:s. A new low record for this movement was made ir U. 8. Rubber 5s, which have now de clined 214 peints without rally. Sin clair Consolidated 6l;s and 7s and Dodge 68, also the Armour issues, were steadier. Local tractions were e heavy. Shares of silk manufacturing panies enjoyed a place of not hejd for many months, notably Ju- Tius ]%l‘elf and Phoenix Hosiery. The manner in which the former shares moved forward directed attention to the refinancing plan app! stockholders last February. This, ac- cording to those in close touch with affairs of the company, has resulted in a large saving to stockholders. In wiew of the fact that earnings are now estimated to be running at a rate in - excess of $8 annually on the common stock it was intimated that stockhold- ers were in line for larger than $4 an- nual dividends and an increase of $1 . s talked of. Because of the strong cash position of Phoenix Hosiery and the highly fa- yorably rate of earnings during the past two years, together with in- creased earnings so far this vear, higher prices for this stock appeared to be justified. California Packing. The selling which came into the market for California Packing today ‘was based upon belief that this was one food company which was not faring as well as others in the indus- try. While so far there has been noth- ing in the affairs of the company to indicate anything unfavorable, the re- port was current in speculative quar- ters that the financial position was not as strong at this time a year ago. What basis there was for the belief, however, could not be determined. Georgetown’s two banks—the Farm- e, & Mechanics' and the Potomac Savings—have arranged for earlier closing during the Summer months. The banks have been openinf at 8:30 and closing-/at 4 o'clock, except on certain Government pay days and on Saturday evenings. They have now agreed for the four months of June, July, August and September to open at 8:30 and close a 3 o'clock in order to let their em- ployes get out an hour earlier during the Summer months. Furthermore, they will not open on Saturday nights, but will remain open on two Govern- ment pay days each month until 5:30. Both bank presidents — Messrs. Haynes and Offutt—and their direc- tors are enthusiastic over the idea. Many Georgetown business men, as well as a host of other patrons, have told officials that they will be glad to co-operate in the earlier closing plan and are sure the change will make no difference in the total amount of busi- ness transacted. Gas Stock Allotments Announced. Letters arriving in the morning mail today told the 7,357 subscribers to the Potomac Electric Power Co’s new is- sue of $5,000,000 5% per cent preferred stock how much they would receive. Those asking for 1 to 5 shares will get the full amount, from 6 to 20 will have 5. The largest amount allotted te anybody will be 200 shares. ' As there are but 50,000 shares avail- able for allotment and the total sub- seriptions of $13,262,000 called for 132, 628 shares, it will be seen that there had to be some sharp scaling down in ‘the amounts allotted the larger subscribers. President Willlam F. Ham announced today that the new stock would be distributed according to the following plan: No. of shares Share group. 110 6 851 to 700 1110 In excess of 700 Bondholders to Meet Soon. Gardner L. Boothe, attorney for the Washington-Virginia Railway Co., says that a meeting of the bondhold- ers .and noteholders who purchased thé right of way and equipment of the company at auction a few days ago will be held early next week in Philadelphia or New York. At this meeting plans will be laid for continuing operation of the road. It is considered certain that the new owners will keep the road in opera- tion and that the patrons will not be affected by the change in owner- ship. The Washington-Mount Vernon line for many years carried very heavy traffic to Alexandria and Mount Vernon. It still handles a large amount of regular business and a host of tourists, but competing bus lines have made competition severe and have naturally had their effect on the company's earnings. The line is also in competition with the steam- hoat. to Mount Vernon. ENOUGH STOCK DEPOSITED.
