CHICAGO, April 8.—The grand scramble for a place on Mayor-elect William Hale Thompson’s band wagon is on. 5 In the wake of an acrimonious campaign there has arisen a loud and sustained note of harmony in which volces of Democrats are blended with those of Republicans. Former leaders in the campaign of Mayor' Willlam E. Dever, Democrat, who was beaten for re-election by Thompson Tuesday, are among the erstwhile opponents of “Big Bill” who seek places in his camp. Thompson forces scored what they interpreted as a “smashing victory last night when the city counc despite its nominal Democratic ma- jority, named two Thompsonites to its all-powerful committee on com- mittees. One Conspicuous Convert. The turning of deciding votes by some Democratic aldermen to the Thompson program brought Alder- man George Maypole, who had been active in the Dever campaign, rush- ing to the front of the council chamber. “I'm climbing on Thompson's band wagon right now,” he shouted. “A lot of you other Democrats are crawling under the tent. We agreed to stick together and vou sold out. Well, T've quit, too. I'm going With ‘Big Bill' and beat you all to it.” A dozen voises were raised at once. The lights went out and the presiding officer adjourned the meeting with the babel at its loudest. Solid Front Was Pledged. Several Democratic aldermen said afterward that it had been agreed to keep a solid front and thus retain con- trol of the council. As a result of last night's action, however, they said it looked as though the council had been “laid in Thompson’s lap.” ‘With this action came new “Big Bill” propably would hav suport of 6 of the 11 school board members, thus being able to carry out his campaign pledge to oust Supt. McAndrews, who was called pro-Brit ish by Thompson. THE EVENING STAR, WASHINGTON, D. ¢, FRIDA Professor Proves Hotel Reservations Binding Contracts By the Associated Press. PARIS, April 8.—Hotel reserva- tions are binding contracts, but it took a law professor from the great Sorbonne University to teach the hotel profession that rule. Nicolas Politis, head of the legal department of the Sorbonn:, just collected 1,000 francs from a hotel at Nice that reserved rooms for him and told him when he arrived that occupants of the rooms had decided to remain a little longer. Politis, knowing his rights, read the law to the hotel keeper, and the court later confirmed his view. SHIP FIGHTS SINKING. Two Steamers Tow. Disabled Schooner in Battle With Sea. Gibson Island is plainly destined to become one of the greatest year-round places of residence in the country for those who love the water. Its location—an hour motor run from Baltimore, an hour and a half from Wash- ington—its rolling topography, the fact that it contains a fresh-water, spring- fed lake of forty acres, the single control of the whole area of 954 acres, the protective restrictions which assure the building of homes of good taste and distinction, and the rare beauty of its surroundings—all combine to make it unique. To reach the island from Washington, take the new Defense Highway to the Crain Highway and thence along that thoroughfare to Glen Burnie. Turn there into the Baltimore-Annapolis Boulevard, and go on, passing Lipin’s Corner on the right, into the Mountain Road, which leads directly to the island causeway. The Gibson Island Company offers for sale building sites on the island.
